“Oh. My. God,” Emmy gasped, grabbing my arm. “Shut. Up.”

“Next,” the guy said again, this time more insistent.

“Emmy.” I prodded her. “It’s our turn.”

“I’ll take a raspberry lychee,” Emmy rattled off our order, barely taking her eyes off me. “And she wants an apple kale.” She tapped her card and paid before I could even process what she’d done.

“It was my turn to pay,” I said, though I knew she wouldn’t let me pay anyway. She never did.

“Who cares about that.” She pulled me aside while we waited for our order. “I can’t believe you’re sleeping with your boss.”

My cheeks heated. “Emmy!” I hissed, my gaze darting around the shop. “Keep your voice down.”

The fewer people who knew, the better. There was more than just my job at stake. Knox’s relationship with his son. Hell, his plans for the team.

When they called Emmy’s name, I quickly grabbed our juices from the counter. Then I steered her toward a table on the sidewalk, and she slumped down in the chair across from me.

“Oh my god. I thought you’d deny it. Or tell me I was wrong. Not…not…” She leaned across the table, her eyes searching my face. “It’s really true?”

I opened my mouth, but instead of trying to shut it down, I whisper-hissed, “You can’t tellanyone.”

“Holy. Fuck,” she said, dragging out the syllables.

But then her shock morphed into something else, and she looked downright giddy. Hell, I felt giddy when I thought about Knox. Well, when I didn’t feel sick about what this would do to Jude and how it could all blow up in my face.

“Wow.” She shook her head. “Just wow…”

I wasn’t sure I’d ever seen Emmy speechless. Or at least, I’d never been the cause of it.

“You’re such a rule-follower.” Her tone was one of exasperation, but it was clear from her expression that she was impressed. “And when you finally decide to break them…”

“I know.” I covered my face with my hands. “God, I know. It’s terrible.”

“Is it, though?” She smirked. “I mean… How’s the sex?”

I rolled my eyes but laughed all the same. “Emmy,” I chided.

“I’m serious, Kendall.” She leaned forward, wearing an earnest expression. “I want to know.”

“It’s… He’s…” My cheeks heated. “Amazing.”

“Better than it was with Jude?” She held her reusable straw to her mouth and took a dainty sip.

I cringed. “Seriously, Emmy? God!”

“What?” She shrugged, leaning back in her chair. “I’m sure you’ve thought about it. How could you not compare the two?”

“Honestly—” I huffed. “I spend most of my time actively tryingnotto think about just that.”

She shook her head. “Well, I can genuinely say Ineversaw this coming. Mostly because I figured you’d never allow it. But I always suspected Knox had the hots for you.”

“You did not!” I slapped her arm playfully, relieved to have finally told her.

“I did,” she said with a solemn expression. “Anytime you were near, his eyes never left you.”

Even though Knox had admitted as much, it shocked me that Emmy had seen it too. How had I never realized it?

“Since when?” I asked, dying to hear more.
