She rested her elbow on the table and dropped her head in her hand. “Since always.”

Did Jude know?

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Um, hello.” She jiggled her head. “You were dating his son.”

What could I say to that? It was true, but I also wasn’t going to admit that she was right. Mostly because Knox had told me that in confidence. It felt too personal. Too intimate.

“You better hope Jude never finds out. He would flip his shit.”

I cringed. “I know.”

“Do you remember how bad it was when Cade got the same watch as him?”

I groaned and shook my head. I’d tried to block that incident out of my mind. But the moment she mentioned it, it came zipping back.

Jude had finally gotten a Breguet watch that he’d been coveting. And when his best friend, Cade, had shown up with the same watch, Jude had been livid. He hadn’t spoken to Cade for days. It was all so immature.

“You’rethe watch,” Emerson said, pointing at me.

“Gee. Thanks,” I said in a wry tone.

“At least you know Knox doesn’t view you as arm candy.”

“What makes you say that?”

“By definition, arm candy is something you show off. But he’s sneaking around with you.”

“It only happened once.” Though, we’d come close to having sex in the bathroom yesterday. At a work function.

“So far.” She gave me a meaningful look.

“I—” I hung my head. I couldn’t keep doing this. I couldn’t keep pretending that nothing had happened with Knox. I couldn’t keep denying how I felt about him. “Yeah.”

She arched an eyebrow. “What does that mean?”

“He wants me to come over tonight. To discuss it.”

She barked out a laugh as I stood. “You mean to fuck.”

“Emerson!” I widened my eyes, begging her to keep her voice down.

“Oh, come on. We both know that’s what he really meant.” She stood as well and tossed her cup in the trash. “So, are you going?”

“I—” I shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

I still hadn’t decided what I was going to do about Knox, even as I rolled up to the gated entrance to his home.

The sun was setting behind the house, the silhouette of the palm trees stark against a cotton-candy pink sky. I hadn’t let Knox know I was coming because I still hadn’t committed to myself that I was going through with this.

My mind kept going back to that sense of being empowered. Of doing what I wanted—for me. And deep down, I knew I wanted to feel that way again. I wanted to be with Knox again.

“Miss Kendall.” Vincent smiled, leaning out of the window of the guard shack. “It’s so nice to see you.”

“You too, Vincent. How have you been?”

“Good. It hasn’t been the same here without you.”
