“Are you okay?” I kept my voice low, brushing her hair over her shoulder.

“Shouldn’t you…? Do they…?” she whispered, glancing around furtively.

“They’ll be discreet,” I assured her, knowing I should probably be less affectionate around others. Especially since Jude didn’t know about Kendall and me yet. Something I was hoping to change soon.

I hated lying to my son. And while I feared his reaction, I was sick of living in this constant state of secrecy.

“Would you like final say, Mr. Crawford?” Jay asked, clearly delighted at the prospect of dressing Kendall.

“I trust Kendall to make a good decision.”

“Still,” she said, twisting her hands. “I’d like to hear your opinion since I’ve never attended an event—” she gulped “—quite like this.”

“Of course.” I took a seat on the couch, watching as she and Jay sifted through the racks of designer dresses.

He told her about the designers and the construction of some of the garments. She listened intently, asking questions and telling him about her preferences. Finally, they narrowed it down to three dresses to try on and then disappeared to the bedroom down the hall.

I checked my emails on my phone and waited for her to reappear. When she did, it was with a swish of fabric. And when I gazed up at her, my heart nearly stopped.

The champagne-colored dress looked as if it had been painted onto her body. It sparkled when she moved, and I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Off the way it dipped low on her chest, revealing a large expanse of skin. Or clung to her hips, the subtle pattern of the sequins only accentuating her incredible curves.

“Leave us,” I said without taking my eyes off Kendall.

Jay and his team left the room, but the tension between Kendall and me remained.

“Turn,” I said in a gruff tone, standing.

She did as I asked, and I reveled in the sight of her. She was gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous—both inside and out. And she was mine.

“What do you think?” she asked in a quiet voice as I stalked toward her.

“I think it’s going to be impossible to keep my eyes—or my hands—off you.” I was salivating just looking at her.

She dipped her head, but she couldn’t hide the slight downturn of her lips. “I wish you didn’t have to.”

I trailed my finger down her sternum, and she shivered. “What do you think of the dress?”

She peered down at the material and smiled. “It’s beautiful.”

“No.” I placed my finger beneath her chin and lifted her gaze to mine. “You’rebeautiful.”

I pressed my lips to hers, intending to give her a quick peck. But it soon turned heated. Kendall gripped my shirt, our hips pressed together. My hands splayed over her ass.

“Knock. Knock,” Jay called in a chipper tone.

I gnashed my teeth and turned away. Focusing on the skyline while I silently willed my hard-on to disappear.

“Did you want to try on any of the others, or shall we proceed with this dress?” Jay asked. Even with my back turned, I knew his question was directed at me.

I looked at Kendall over my shoulder. This was her decision, not mine. I wanted her to feel as confident and beautiful as she was. “Up to you,mi cielo.”

“Yes!” She beamed. “I love this dress.”

“Well, that was easy.” Jay rubbed his hands together. “Now for shoes and accessories.”

“I have some business to attend to,” I said, pressing my lips to Kendall’s cheek. “I’ll see you in a bit.”

She nodded, seeming much more at ease now. Though the fact that Jay had given her a glass of champagne certainly helped. He was gushing over the dress, and he’d rolled out a ton of shoes. I chuckled to myself, the door closing behind me.
