She leans forward. “Can we use birth control? Or not have sex?”

“Are you serious?” I stare at her incredulously. It’s not like I’m alone in wanting sex. She came all over my cock in record fucking time last night.

“Birth control, then?”

“I already told you what I want to do.”

With an angry sigh, she turns and stalks out of my study. Apparently these are fights she needs to have.

My phone whistles with a new text message. I check, and it’s from Trick’s little sister.

Ashling: Heard you’ve got a baby boy now. Want to have a Patrick-Callahan playdate? My cutie nephews r in Boston. Could bring them over.”

Liam: Trick lets you drive his kids around in your hot rod?

Ashling: LOL no way. I’ve got the C Crue Babymobile. Comes complete with bodyguards.

Liam: right. I’ll get back to you.

OLIVIA

After our disagreement,Liam concedes to our hosting his family at his house, instead of going to his mom’s. When I ask to, his immediate response of “sure” helps. It turns out that only his mom and his brother Luke are coming, which feels less overwhelming.

Liam cooks and I help in the kitchen until Brady demands to be let out of the playpen. I bring him over to the stove as Liam stirs the beef stew. I keep a safe distance from the heat, but raise Brady so he can see inside the pot.

“Look at all those colors, Bray.” I point to the cubes of brown, yellow, and orange. And little flecks of green. Isn’t it nice of Daddy to make all this for his family. Let’s give Daddy a kiss.”

Liam turns and leans down. I give him a kiss on the cheek and then move Brady closer.

“Give a kiss, Bray.” I show him again, and he tries to mimic me, putting his open mouth on Liam’s cheek.

Liam smirks. “Needs work.” He kisses the top of Brady’s head before wiping his cheek with a rag. When he turns back to the cutting board, I don’t move away.

Brady grabs Liam’s shirt in his little fists and tugs and twists, playing. I wait to see if Liam will complain, but he doesn’t stop what he’s doing. This part is nice, and I appreciate it.

There was a fussy dad in a coffee shop in Stone Hill one morning who kept pushing his wife to control their toddler. “Can you take her?” “That’s enough.” “Can’t you get her to stop?” All the toddler was doing was exploring, and the dad was completely uncomfortable with it. That morning Brady was still so small he mostly slept on our outing, but I couldn’t help but wonder how Liam would be as a dad. So far, I like what I see from him.

When the doorbell rings, my breath catches. I’ve dressed Brady in a sky blue-colored onesie that makes his eyes look even more blue. I steal another glance at him.Adorable.

Liam opens the door, and the greetings travel down the hall. His mom has a Boston, rather than Irish accent. His brother doesn’t seem to have an accent at all.

Mrs. Callahan is dressed in jeans and a long black button-down sweater over a green shirt. She’s tall and solid. Like her sons, actually. Luke is tall and muscular with posture like an oak. He’s clean-shaven and has brown hair that’s close-cropped. Over jeans, he wears a burgundy v-neck sweater with some sort of gold military logo.

I’m holding Brady, so I raise my free hand in greeting.

“Oh, my God, Liam,” his mom says loudly as she approaches us. “Look at these two.” His mom takes Brady’s foot in her hand and rubs it. She looks over her shoulder at Liam and shakes her head. “He looks like an angel.” When she turns back to me, she says, “He gets that from you. I’m Marianne. You call me Mari if you want. Do you like Olivia or Liv better?”

“Either is fine.”

“Can I take him?” she asks, putting out her arms.

“Sure.” I start to hand him over, but Brady immediately registers a protest and grabs on. “Okay, Bray,” I say, rubbing his back. “He’s a little shy of strangers. He doesn’t know many people yet.”

“Aw. All right. We’ll give it a minute.” Her booming voice is a little startling, but there’s also a warmth to it. She accepts a bottle of beer from Luke who sets one on the counter for Liam, too.

“Olivia, what are you drinking?” Luke asks.
