That night, both of his sons and his partner were all under his roof, safe, happy, and fed. For Rick, there was little to top that.

The following day, Colby came into the room early, and I sleepily sat up as he crawled over the bed to me. “Daddy Kan! It’s morning!”

“It is, Colby,” I said, and turned my head to wake Rick, but that side of the bed was empty of my love. “Where’s Daddy?”

All I got were giggles.

“Colby, where is your daddy?”

“I am not supposed to tell,” he whispered, totally serious with his mission. “Chan and Daddy told me not to.”

“Oh? A big secret, huh? Well, you’re very grown up keeping a secret, Colby.”

He brightened and hugged me around the neck. “I’m big!”

“Yes, you are,” I told him, hugging him back.

As I held Colby in that hug, I saw Chandler and Rick coming through the door, Rick holding a tray filled with breakfast items. “Good morning, Kanan,” Rick said, then told Colby, “Move, please, Colby, so I can set the tray.”

“Daddy, I kept the secret! Daddy Kan said I was big now!”

“You are very grown up, Colby. I’m proud of you.”

He beamed from the praise and moved beside me on the bed. Chandler came and moved my pillows behind me for comfort so I could sit upright and eat my breakfast.

The tray was set on my lap and then the two watched me as I looked from one to the other. “So, the breakfast isn’t the secret?”

“No,” Rick said, his eyes dancing. “It’s not.”

“No, it’s much bigger, but how do you like the spread?” Chandler said, nodding to the tray that I hadn’t examined.

“Subtle, Chan,” Rick groaned.

On the tray was a silver pot of coffee and a big white mug, a plate of eggs benedict, a rose lay above the plate and a small glass of juice was next to the mug. At first, I didn’t notice the manilla envelope under the mug, juice glass, and coffee pot, but when I did, I knew that was the secret.

“Oh, what’s this?”

Colby started to say something, but Chandler hushed him quickly. “Let him open it, Col.”

“Hurry, hurry!”

“Okay, Colby. I’ll hurry.”

I slid the envelope out from under the pot and cup, lifting the juice to keep it from sloshing over onto the envelope, feeling their anxiousness. “This is…something special?”

“Just open it, Kan, dang,” Rick said.

“Language, Daddy,” Colby chided, but Rick just gaped at him.

I opened the flap and pulled out a thick set of documents. The first words on the top werePetition of Adoption.

My breath stopped, my hands shook, and I knew the reaction I was having wouldn’t be what they expected. “Adoption?”

“Honey, yeah, we spoke about this.”

I thumbed through the papers to see there were two sets of the same documents. My head turned to Chandler. “You…you too?”

“Yes! You’re…you’re my dad, Kan. You’re Colby’s dad. We want you, if you want us.”
