When I got to the main house, I heard shouting. I hurried through to the kitchen to see the trio laughing and chasing little Colby around the kitchen. “What’s going on?”

Chandler stopped, turned to me, and said, “Hi, Dad.”

Shocked silent and still, I stared at him.

“Chandler, please,” Rick groaned. “Can’t you be subtle?”

Chandler started to laugh as I managed to look at Rick. “Wh-what is he saying?”

“I saw it on him, it wasn’t his fault,” Chandler explained, then came over to me and hugged me quickly. “He’s all smiles and stuff. Look at him!”

Colby came to me, his arms stretched in the air. “Up,” he said, determined.

I picked him up and saw that even he was smiling.

We all ate breakfast together, then Rick and I skipped the run and hung out with the kids until it was time for Chandler to leave.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to go, just as a driver? What if they pull a tooth?”

“Haven’t had a cavity in five years, Dad, but sure, they’re pulling teeth.”

He left laughing at his father, but I smiled at Rick. “He’s gonna be fine, Rick.”

“No, he’s leaving me, and I can’t watch over him every minute,” he laughed. “I’m going to lose my shit.”

“Daddy!”

Rick took Colby from me, kissed his forehead, telling him, “Sorry, buddy.”

“Bad words,” Colby admonished as he twisted Rick’s nose playfully.

“I know, Daddy said a bad word. I say them too much when your brother drives me nuts, huh, Colby?”

“Not Chan,” Colby said, then seemed to look to me for confirmation.

“Not Chan, that’s right,” I agreed.

“Okay, I’m out voted. Go play for now.”

“Okay.”

Rick let Colby down and he ran off to find his toys and Rick was in my arms, kissing me. “Sorry, Kan.”

“No, it’s okay. I was just worried how they’d take it.”

“I don’t think Colby understands it, so we’ll hold off on displays in front of him for now. I have no clue how to tell him.”

“Kids aren’t born with prejudice or preconceived notions of mom and dad. He knows only Daddy. If that man in his life has a girlfriend or a boyfriend, I don’t think he’d care either way. He’ll only care if you neglect your time with him, and that won’t happen on my watch.”

“Then we’d better get going. He’ll be getting into something.”

We found him right away, quietly playing with his books. Books were Colby’s favorite things. We sat with him and read him three before he was satisfied, then we took him outside to play in the little pool Rick had gotten for him.

For the night filled with love with only Rick, the following day was filled with love of a different Rick. There was a passionate man and a caring, doting father in one beautiful package.

Chandler came home, holding the side of his face and he even added a limp. Before I could tell Rick that Chandler was playacting, he ran over to him, worried and hollering. “I told you this could happen! Why didn’t you call?”

I groaned while Chandler moved his hand and started laughing. “Just messing with you.”
