“Chan…”

I laughed with Chandler, but asked him, “Why would getting a tooth pulled give you a limp?”

“I was limping?”

Chapter Twenty

Thefirstsnowflakesfelloutside the window while Rick held me, watching in the warmth of the living room. The main house had windows that showed the view so perfectly, it was as if I could feel the snow melting on my skin.

“I love this time of year,” Rick whispered to me. “I can’t wait to show you the property in the snow.”

We’d been together two beautiful months, getting to know each other and trying to slowly get the kids used to seeing me around in a new capacity.

Chandler, lately, was a nightmare the closer he got to leaving. He was a cranky kid, but his father was understanding and gave him some space. As much as that hurt Rick to give his soon-to-be-flying chick space, he did it.

Colby liked having another man around to lavish attention on him, but he still hadn’t been told directly that his father and I were together. We wondered if we had to, but I figured that questioning came out of fear. We were afraid he’d be against it.

Burke came by to say hello to us and for other reasons. Rick and I had been talking a lot about starting to practice the lifestyle, as we both enjoyed it. The thing was, Rick had never practiced with a man before. While he knew what he liked and had me give him my lists of things I like, soft and hard limits, Rick was still unsure.

That quality was one I loved. He’d done scenes before, knew the rules, and yet, since he’d never dominated a man, he wanted guidance. That’s where Burke came in the picture.

“Hey, Kan,” Burke said when I opened the door.

I kissed his cheek as he hugged me and I whispered, “Thank you. Is he almost ready?”

“Anxious?”

“No! Us, in bed, we’re great, but…”

“You’re both wanting to try the other stuff. I know, he told me,” Burke confessed, laughing. “No worries, Kan my man. He’s getting the hang of things fast. The man’s good at everything.”

“Yeah. I know,” I said, rolling my eyes. “It’s intimidating.”

“Get him to dance with you. You’ll win one.”

“Gee, thanks.”

Colby ran over to his newest good friend, Burke. “Book, Book!”

I loved that he called BurkeBook. “Hey, Colby, dude!”

Colby was picked up and tickled. “Stop! No tickles,” Colby hollered, but laughed in that sweet way he had. Yes, I was totally enamored with the kids. Still, it was the sweetest laughter ever.

“Sorry, sorry.”

“Read to me,” Colby demanded, and Burke went right to the little bookshelf with Colby in his arms.

“Pick one out, then I have to take your dad to run some errands.”

“Okay, this one,” he said, handing Burke his most recent favorite book, Tango Makes Three. I have to admit to buying it for him to get him used to the idea of two daddies, though I wasn’t so bold as to think of myself that way yet. All I could do was to hope that someday, we’d get there as a new family.

As Burke read the book to Colby, Rick took my hand and led me into the pantry. After closing the door, he kissed me tenderly. “I love that book. I love you.”

I kissed him while smiling and took his handsome head in my hands. “I swear, I’m not pushing.”

“I know. You’ve told me ten times since you bought the book. It’s good to show him different families. He’s never met a family with two moms or two dads. We had a few gay couples before your friends, including Noah and his late husband. None of them, however, had kids.”

“Good to teach him these things, yeah…”
