But right now, I’m wishing I had taken Ashley and Kyler up on their offer to stay in their guest bedroom. I thought I needed some time to myself, but now that I’m here, it’s too quiet. The place is spotless because Ava’s a super neat person, but God love her, she can’t cook.

I make my way to the kitchen and open the fridge, trying to decide what’s for dinner. Cooking for one seems wasteful, but ordering delivery is my only other option, and that’s what I always do. I close the door before glancing at the microwave for the time.

Phoebe is probably on her date now. I wonder what he planned for her, if she’ll have a good time. I hope she does, but I can’t help but be disappointed. But hey, if it doesn’t work out with him, I can ask her again. She didn’t seem appalled by the idea once she found out I’m not with Ashley.

Just as I pull out my phone to order dinner, the doorbell rings. I don’t think Ava was expecting anyone, and surely her friends would know she’s not here tonight. The doorbell app pulls up on my phone, and to my surprise, Phoebe is waiting at the door. She grins at me, and I can’t help but smile in return.

“Hold on. Be right there.” I hurry down the hall, hoping I don’t look ridiculous on the screen to her. I take a deep breath before opening the door, then remember she could see and hear me. Oh my god. Oh well.

“Hey there.” I lock my phone and tuck it back into my pocket. “How are you?”

“I’m good,” she replies, and I step back to let her in. “I heard Ava was out of town, and I thought you might need some company.”

“You canceled your date?” I blurt out, taking in her appearance. She’s dressed as if she’s going on a date, in a slinky off-the-shoulder black dress and strappy heels. She looks absolutely stunning.

“That’s a long story, but ultimately yes, I canceled the date.” She chuckles. “I couldn’t get your invitation off my mind.”

I take a seat on the couch and she joins me. We turn toward each other. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” I joke.

“So what did you have in mind for us?” She leans toward me, her dress dipping in just the right spot, and while I’d love to give into temptation and sink into her lush body right now, I know that I don’t just want sex. I’ve had plenty of hookups. I’m looking for the real thing now.

I jump up and grab her hand, pulling her off the couch. The sensation of her skin on mine is a shock to my system, but I fight through it and pull her toward the door.

“Wait. Stop.” Phoebe digs her heels in, literally and figuratively. “Am I coming on too strong?”

“It’s not that—”

“I’m serious. This is the second time I’ve flirted with you and both times you’ve kinda shut me down. So I don’t want to take advantage of you or anything like that.”

“Phoebe.” I pull her to me, pressing a finger to her lips. “It’s not that I don’t want to.”

Her soft curves wrap around my body, our figures fitting together perfectly, testing my restraint and my zipper even more.

“Oh.” She clears her throat, pressing herself against my hard length.

“It’s just not all that I want. It’s important to me for you to know that.”

She nods and I move my hand. She licks her lips with the tip of her tongue, and I turn in a flash to avoid the urge to tackle her to the couch.

“So what are we going to do, then?” she asks.

“We’re going out tonight.”

ELEVEN

I’M A FAN.

“After you.” Isaac motions me into the Uber he ordered on our way down the stairs, and I slide across the seat and buckle up.

Once he’s inside, our driver takes off—to where, I don’t know. Isaac hasn’t told me yet. I also don’t know why he didn’t drive, because the truck was there, but it’s exciting to have someone surprise me for once, so I don’t question things.

As if he’s reading my mind, Isaac asks, “No questions about where we’re going?”

“I’m just along for the ride.” I smile over at him. “It’s nice to have things planned for me, so I’ll take it.”

His gaze lingers on me for a moment before he speaks again. “Is that not something people do for you?”

“Are you kidding? I’m always the planner. That’s what I did for a few years—manage an estate. And Greg, well, he was too busy planning for other women, if you catch my drift.”
