“I will. I promise, Mom.” He’s out the back door like he’s been set free.

“How’d he know his way around?” I muse aloud.

“Ava showed him the map of this place on the way up here,” Isaac answers, sidling up beside me.

“Oh, well, that explains it.” Without Chance here, the silence between us is palpable, all the things we’ve left unsaid still hovering between us.

“So, Chance mentioned he’s staying with you now.”

“He is, yes. His dad gets him every other weekend, but if Chance wants to see him, I’m sure I’ll let him go. We’re really…trying to be good co-parents. I told Greg about you and Quinn’s moms, actually.”

“And?”

“He asked if I was suggesting we move in together.” I shudder. “But once we cleared that up, he got it.”

“So speaking of Greg, there’s something I meant to ask you and never got the chance to.” Isaac changes the subject abruptly.

“What’s that?”

“Is your ex-husband a gymnast?”

“What?” I burst out laughing. “Oh my god. No, no. I was before we got married. I was pretty good, actually, but…” I sigh. “He wanted to go to medical school, and I gave up that dream.”

“Not entirely, though. You kept some of the equipment,” he remarks, his hands gripping my waist. “You could start again, if you wanted.” He lowers his mouth to where it’s nearly brushing mine. “That’s not the only thing we could start again.”

Then his mouth meets mine, and he’s kissing me as if his life depends on it. I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him closer, deepening our kiss. Outside the window, the fireworks start, bangs and whistles and bright lights illuminating the sky, and we pull away, smiling at each other.

“I suppose you’re right. It’s never too late to follow your dreams.”

The End.
