Adam leaned forward, pressing a kiss to my neck. “I love you.”

I spent the next several hours drawing everything I saw. The lake. Our meadow. His face. I filled the pages with this moment so I could never forget.

But something was stopping me from drawing the future. One thread from our past I wanted to wrap up before we could move on. I set the notebook on the towel.

“I have an idea.” I turned, straddling Adam’s lap. It didn’t surprise me how easy we were together. It had always been like this.

It was why we’d found each other. Because we were the only people, we didn’t have to pretend in front of. We didn’t have to be strong and unbroken. Or polite. Ruthless. We could just be.

“Is it about dragging you back to the house so I can fuck you, nightling?” His smirk made my blood race.

“No, I—.”

“Okay, right here is good.” He gently thrust his hips, letting me feel how hard he was.

I gasped as he ran one hand up the outside of my thigh, pushing up the sweatshirt I’d thrown on over my bathing suit. My entire body tingled from his touch. My pulse jumped as his lips ghosted across my neck. I couldn’t stop the tiny moan that escaped as his stubble brushed my skin.

“Adam.” I whimpered, placing a hand on his chest. But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pull him close or push him away. “I really did have something to say.”

“Go ahead.” His tongue flicked across my earlobe. “I’m listening.”

I lost my train of thought as he sucked it gently between his lips. His scent surrounded me, making me forget I had an idea. Or maybe it was his bare chest and all those delicious muscles.

I felt his abs ripple under my fingers. Adam groaned as I ran my hands along his body. He felt amazing under my touch. Like safety and home. He gripped my ass, grinding me against his hard cock.

It felt so good I was almost ready to let it go. But my idea was too important. “It’s about Britney.”

His entire body stilled like I’d shocked him. His eyes were as cold as ice as he pulled back to stare at me. “What did you say?”

I ran both hands up and down his chest. I hoped my touch could soothe the rage vibrating from him. He might look cold, but I saw it for what it was now. Pain and anger.

He wasn’t the kind of guy who would yell or throw things. He was silent. When he got quiet was when you should be afraid.

“I want to find her,” I spoke softly, stroking his skin. “I want to know why she did it.”

I needed to know. How could she betray me like that? I never could’ve hurt her.

She was as close to me as Adam or Zara. One of the only people who had my secrets. And she’d used them against me. Wrecked me in the worst possible way.

But I couldn’t explain why she’d done it. How she could go from friend to enemy without a reason.

He sighed deeply as his hand matched my touch, stroking my spine. “I’ve been looking, nightling. She disappeared. Your father called Matteo asking what I did to her.”

“You didn’t…do anything, right?” I swallowed thickly as I glanced at him through my lashes.

I knew the things he’d done. Knew he was a killer. But I couldn’t picture him hurting Britney. Not someone who was that close to us.

“No.” His jaw ticked like he resented having to answer my question.

“Good.” The exhale rattled through my chest. I might be mad at her right now. Feel betrayed and broken, but I couldn’t hurt her. She was my friend. There had to be a reason. Maybe then we could find our way back to being friends.

“I think Zara can help us find Britney. But I don’t know how to get to her.”

“I do.”
