I walk into the office and can see straight away Young’s on edge. I look to Calvin, who shrugs as we watch him pacing behind his desk.

“What’s going on?” I ask, placing my tablet on the desk before me as I sit down.

“I could ask you the same thing. How the hell has someone been able to get past your new system and get access to the basement?” he demands, leaning on his desk and glaring at the two of us.

“What’s happened in the basement?” Calvin asks frowning. I pull up the feed on my phone, and it hasn’t logged anyone entering or leaving the room until this morning when Young went in himself.

“You tell me! You are the security guys!” he yells pushing himself away from the desk and pacing again.

“You will need to tell us exactly what happened because, as you know, the new cameras haven’t been fitted yet and more than half the entrance sensors are still to be fitted. I warned you there would be a time frame to this, and you said fine!” I snap. If there’s anything I hate more than being lied to, it's people accusing me of not staying true to my word.

Young stares at me for a moment before almost falling into his chair. He types on this keyboard and turns the screen to show us.

I received this email last night but didn’t see it until this morning.

Geralt,

Looks like you have brought more than just the building from Taylor. Be aware Taylor was into more than you will ever know. His death has caused a stir and now people are looking for things he took.

Watch your back and who has access to certain areas of your building, as they may unearth much more than you would ever suspect.

An old friend.

There is no email address or contact details. The emails isn’t even in the inbox. It’s in the drafts. I lean forward and take control of the keyboard and mouse before doing what I do best, getting into a system which is meant to be hackproof.

“When you received this what did you do?” I ask making a mental note of the time stamp and opening the cameras at that time. The only people I can see on any cameras are our two employees who were on the night shift. They are together as they are meant to be as they look around for any issues. There is no one in the basement or this office.

“Like I said this morning. As soon as I read it, I knew they were referring to the basement. I went down and found that a section of the room had been cleared of boxes. I haven’t authorised anything to be done since I filled it and sealed the room as you suggested.”

When we learnt something was possibly buried under the floor, I suggested turning the room into storage. That way it would appear we were none the wiser of what was in there. What was the point in moving things around there besides digging the floor up?

I look to Young, still amazed someone got past my system.

“Show me.”

We walk into the room and there is no mistaking that someone has been down here moving things around. I notice the floor is covered in thick dust, so move a couple of boxes to discover and there are signs someone has tried to dig a hole in the ground.

I look at the floor around the site and can’t see anything that indicates what they had used to try and break through the concrete.

“Who was on last night?” Calvin asks behind me.

“Jeffery and Haycock,” I answer. I look up to Calvin, who gives me a knowing look. “I know,” I mutter before climbing back to my feet. We’ve been having issues with Jefferys for a while and were already discussing if he would pass his probation period.

I walk to the door and look outside to see there is no evidence that anything has occurred in there. I look up at the camera that’s meant to be facing the door, but instead, it's facing the wall. I growl under my breath and look back around. There are no footprints, scuff marks, tracks from wheels, nothing at all that would signal that something was amiss down here.

“It’s too clean,” I mutter, walking back into the room. I walk along the walls, tapping and pressing anything that looks out of place, but the walls are all intact. I look up at the ceiling, and it’s all one solid mass. No vents, nothing.

“What are you thinking, Houdini?”

I turn to look at him and shake my head.

“There’s too many missing pieces. There’s no evidence of anyone being here besides the dust, moved boxes and damaged flooring. No footprints, nothing. What does that tell you?” I ask him.

“They knew how to get in here without being seen, or heard,” he answers. I nod and look back to Young.

“I’m going to spend the day here again, going through each person’s access cards and where they can go. Someone is messing with you, and I don’t like it one bit.”
