Grandma was sitting in her wheeled chair on the back porch and knitting. She had to go a lot slower since her hands ached, but she’d never been one to sit and do nothing for long.

“About time you’ve come to visit me.” Grandma gave him a powdery-scented kiss on the cheek after he hugged her.

“I missed you, Grandma,” Felix sat in a chair next to her. “So, uh, have you heard any rumors?”

“You know I don’t listen to gossip. By the time it gets to you, it’s been changed six times over, and it’s all nonsense.”

“Well, I’m the King now along with Rainier. Mother told you that…”

“Yeah, I know.” Grandma narrowed her eyes at him. “Am I ever going to get a great-grandchild from you?”

Only abundant males could have babies, and Rainier wasn’t one. He could get a consort for a while just to have a baby for an heir, and Felix was fine with that since it was considered normal here. If so, that would be their child. Or they could leave the succession as it was, and Natalie would likely have a baby one day. Felix didn’t care to have a child from his own seed.

“I’m not creating a kid myself,” he said. “I’m the King because I’m marrying King Rainier.”

He’d also gradually turn into a fairy once the ceremony was over, and he’d gain Rainier’s magic abilities. All humans who married a fairy did so, and the change was quite slow. He’d also look the same, but he figured maybe he should save the info for another time and not overload her in case she wasn’t aware of that.

Grandma’s knitting needles clacked as she seemed to think that over, and his stomach tightened. If she wasn’t fine with it, maybe Mother could talk to her.

“I didn’t say anything, but I kinda guessed because I doubt a King would pick some random commoner to rule with him,” she finally said. “Just because I’m old doesn’t mean my brain fell out, and I figured you’d tell me when you’re ready. Are you happy?”

“I’m very happy with him.”

She leaned over to kiss his cheek. “You’ll have to take me out when you get married. I’m not missing my only grandchild’s wedding.”

Relief flooded him. “We’ll take you. I promise.”

“Push me inside. I need to meet King Rainier and make sure he’s proper for you. My grandson isn’t marrying some puffed-up arse. Royalty puts their drawers on one leg at a time too.”

Felix laughed as he stood and moved to get behind her wheeled chair. “He’s far from being an arse.”
