There was nothing I could do about it. I had to keep my ear and scars covered. If Draven saw them, he, like others had, might not think I could do the job he needed me to. I understood why. I’d been shot in the head. Not sure if I would have been in their shoes if I’d have hired me either. Damien might not know everything, but I was a patient of Dr. Henderson. Not sure Draven knew that. I’d prefer to keep it that way if possible.

Grabbing my room keycard, I headed down to Draven’s room. I wished he’d found another location for our meeting, but as they say, he was the boss.

When I arrived, I knocked and waited. He opened the door holding his cell phone to his ear. He waved me to enter, then closed the door behind me.

“I don’t care what they are telling you. I’m not buying it. There is more to it than that. Keep digging,” he barked.

This wasn’t a side of him that I had seen, but then again, we’d hardly spoken. Draven pointed to the table already set up for breakfast and I walked over and took a seat. If he needed time to finish his call, I’d be more than happy to give him his privacy.

Instead, I got to sit there listening to him give someone hell for not doing what they were told and being threatened with being replaced. Was it his intention for me to hear this so I would be shaking in my shoes and walking as though on thin ice? Not my style. I wasn’t intimidated or scared easily. And this was just a job. If he fired me, I’d find another. Simple.

When he ended the call, he walked over to me and sat down. The scowl on his brow couldn’t be ignored. I wasn’t going to ask if everything was okay. I knew it wasn’t.

“You wanted to meet with me this morning. Is this to discuss my role in more detail?” I asked.

His eyes traveled down me and with the same admiring expression that he had last night. He wouldn’t have even had that view if I hadn’t thought something was wrong and answered the door too quickly.Sorry, Draven. This is the business me. The one who works for you.

Still looking at me he said, “Yes. Let’s start with your attire.”

“What is wrong with what I’m wearing?”

“You are not approachable at all. Hell, you’re the opposite of approachable. If I send you to speak to a woman to make her feel at ease, she’ll clamp up even more than she does with me. I sure in hell don’t want you scaring the women here,” he stated in a serious tone.

I was taken aback by his words. “I look very professional.”

“For the FBI or an undertaker, but if you haven’t noticed, you’re not working for a funeral home.”

Wow. He doesn’t hold back. It was refreshing. I didn’t need to try to read his emotions or figure out what he was trying to hint at.

“I hate to tell you this, but my wardrobe is much the same. All business suits, but different colors, like dark grey and navy.” All of which were usually perfect for my role. But the problem of no one providing me with much information before I arrived in Tabiq meant not being properly prepared with what I needed to pack amongst other things. This isn’t on me. This is on you and Damien.“If I’d known prior to my flight, I would’ve packed differently.” He didn’t seem to pick up on the fact that I was shifting the blame, but it was a moot point now. All I knew was that I had to fix it. “I’m sure there are shops here in Tabiq where I can purchase something more…appropriate.”

“I don’t frequent dress shops, so I wouldn’t know. I can call Reesa and ask if she can take you shopping,” he stated.

“Youcannotask the president to take me shopping,” I replied, shocked he even suggested such a thing. “She is a very important person.”

Draven nodded. “And what we do is per her request. She wouldn’t want to jeopardize it because you’re not dressed right.”

That was a valid point as well. “There must be another woman who could bring me. Or maybe I just go on my own. I’ve never needed an escort before.”

“You do here. No way in hell are you running around Tabiq alone. This place is not as safe as we’d like it to be,” he stated.

He’s forgetting what I do. “This has to do with the man in custody at the hospital.”

It wasn’t a question.

“He is one person. But you are correct.”

“I understand your fear. There is a missing girl. But I’m not eighteen and I can take care of myself. No one works for the bureau without self-defense training.”And if I’d been allowed to travel with my gun, I really wouldn’t have been worried. That wasn’t totally true either. I had my gun strapped to my side when I got grabbed from behind. It didn’t do me any good that day. If it wasn’t for the sharpshooters, I’d be dead. Draven knew none of that, and I didn’t want him to. If he or Damien had a clue as to how I still trembled on the inside just thinking back to that horrible day, I wouldn’t be employed by them now.

Draven was contemplating how to respond. I could see the internal battle. Was he about to share more information with me or was he about to shut down my idea?

“There are strict rules about traveling in Tabiq. Whether you’re a man or woman, if you’re not a native, you don’t travel alone. You might be working for me, but these rules apply to everyone.”

I had read that on the flight, but never did I think it would apply to me. “If it is so…dangerous here, then why did the Hendersons build a five-star resort here?” There are so many other countries they could’ve chosen, one that people had heard of before.

It was none of my business, and I shouldn’t have asked. Usually, I was better at keeping such questions to myself.

“We will be having dinner with Shaun tonight. Why don’t you ask him? It’s not for me to answer.”
