“A small room it is.”

She nodded and then asked, “Did you get to finish your call?”

“I did. And there is a new development you should be aware of.”

“What is it?” she asked.

“The suspect was found dead in his room. We do not know if it was foul play or not. Bennett will reach out when he knows more,” I said.

“And the girl?” she asked softly.

“Still no sign of her.”

I saw the pain in her eyes. Kinsley cared deeply. This job was going to become very difficult for her. Reesa had explained to me that most of the girls would never be found. They were either taken from Tabiq to other countries, or worse, killed. This wasn’t something I’d shared with Kinsley yet.

With any luck, you will decide to go back to the States before you ever learn the truth.

I reached over and took her hand in mine. “Bennett is doing everything he can to find her.”

She nodded. “I know.”

“Want to tell me what you’re thinking?” I asked.

“That I can travel to the other side of the planet, but the evil…is the same.”

“I wish I could tell you differently, but you’re right. All we can do is try to help those we can,” I said.

“But unfortunately, we can’t help them all,” she said softly, knowing that this poor missing girl might not ever be found.

“No, we can’t. No one can. But we must keep trying because even saving one is worth fighting for,” I reminded her.

She pulled her hand from mine and said, “Let’s get back to the resort. I want to spend the afternoon working on the information Lita gave us.”

“Good. And I’ll see what I can do to help Bennett if that’s okay.”

She nodded. We both needed to focus on helping or the weight of this job would start to affect us. But tonight, there would be no talk about Tabiq. Tonight, no talk about the FBI. Tonight, we were just Draven and Kinsley, and hopefully let the rest of the world go just for an hour or two before reality came crashing back down on us.

I looked over at her and I knew her mind was miles away. There was no need to ask what she was thinking. Not this time. It was the same thing on my mind.

How can we help the Tabiqian families without bringing more pain and heartache to them.

Not sure it was going to be possible, but we were going to try.

CHAPTER9

Kinsley

The afternoon flew by, mostly because my nose was in my computer screen the entire time. Draven was right when he said this wasn’t easy. There were no records at all about the missing girls. Not a police report, not a newspaper article either. And I now understood why.

My heart broke just thinking of how many families there must be who had gone through the same or similar situation.

I wanted to call Brian and tell him what I’d learned and let him know that what we dealt with at the bureau was nothing compared to what Tabiq had faced. If I was still working for the FBI, I’d do that, but now, I worked for Draven and my job was here in Tabiq.

But this wasn’t over for these people. Even if it happened years ago, the trauma didn’t leave. Not for the families, and surely not for the victims. No one had to tell me why the young women had been taken, and then discarded. They were used for their innocence. Just thinking of it made me physically ill. I had so much pent-up anger and rage that I wasn’t sure I could restrain myself if I ever crossed paths with one of the men who’d organized it all.

I closed my laptop and rubbed my temples. My head was pounding. Hours of research and nothing to show for it. It explained why Draven was so frustrated about this too. He’d probably done everything I had and had come up empty-handed, just like me. There had to be something we were missing.

Looking at the clock, I knew it was time to get ready for dinner. Originally, I had planned on wearing one of my dresses that I had purchased when I was with Reesa, but Draven insisted we walk on the beach, so I picked up something more casual.
