Maybe it was all these years of working as a PI that ruined it for me, but no way in hell did I want anything serious, never mind marriage. Yes, my clients’ husbands were the ones doing the cheating, but many times they were with a woman who knew damn well that the man they were sleeping with was married and they just didn’t care. It was two wrongs that crumbled a once happy home.

I didn’t bother listening to the remaining voicemails and just deleted them. Whoever they were, they must have realized I wasn’t calling back as I hadn’t checked this line for months. They probably think I’m an inconsiderate ass.

Just as I tossed my phone on the bed, it rang. Didn’t have Brian’s number, but it was from the US.

“Hello,” I said, not sure how to answer. Say Jack or Draven?

“Hello. I’m looking for Jack,” Brian said.

“Hey. Thanks for calling. This is Draven, Damien’s brother,” I replied.

“I know who you are. But I’m calling for Jack,” Brian stated, his tone didn’t show his displeasure over me using a false name.

“Yeah. About that. I didn’t want you to call Damien, so I gave them a false name.”And number.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because I have questions about Kinsley Beck. Damien said you recommended her to work with me. But I think you know how I feel about the FBI.”

“Yeah, you’ve made it clear. You don’t want us in your business. What does that have to do with Kinsley?” he questioned.

“I want to know why she is no longer with the FBI,” I asked.

“Ask her. It’s her place to share,” Brian stated.

Not what I wanted. “You recommended her. Damien might be willing to accept that as enough, but I’m not. I don’t want someone who’s been fired from the FBI working with me.” That wasn’t totally true. I was more concerned about where her loyalty stood.

“If she weren’t qualified or if I didn’t believe she would be an asset to you, I never would’ve mentioned her to Damien. Kinsley knows her stuff.”

“Great. But that’s not what I’m asking,” I reiterated.

“She just…well let’s say that she was looking for a change.”

“One that brings her to Tabiq? You know that’s not a small change. There is nothing about this place that is normal by US standards,” I replied. Brian knew exactly why she left. What was the big secret? I was going to find out. It’s what I do.

“Not all cases are resolved with the outcome we hope for. It takes a toll on a person. Sometimes an agent needs a change,” he explained.

Now that was something that made sense. Things went down in a way that might have cost someone their life. Mentally it could break anyone, even a well-trained agent.

“And you think her coming to Tabiq is a good idea? You know this country isn’t what one would call stable,” I reminded him.

“She is capable of taking care of herself. Would I have liked to see her take a desk job instead? Yeah. But that’s not her. And I’m not sure it would’ve been the best thing for her either. Damien said that you’d watch out for her. I’m counting on you doing just that.”

“Thought you said she could handle herself?”

“She can. But she will need a…friend. Someone she can trust. Someone she can talk to,” he said.

“And you want that to be me?” I half chuckled.

“Actually, I was hoping it would be Damien and MaKayla, but you will have to do. You have my number. If for some reason you think she is…over her head, then call me.”

“What are you? Her guardian?” I asked.

“No. I am a colleague who cares about what happens to her. I can’t watch over her while she’s there, so I’m passing the torch onto you.”

“This is bullshit. I don’t need to meet her to know she doesn’t belong here. Anyone who needswatchingshouldn’t be here. When she arrives in the morning, I’m sending her right back on the jet,” I stated firmly.

“Damien is not going to be happy,” he said, angrily.
