“He’s not here towatchover our new employee. So, I don’t want to hear it. Kinsley might be good at her job, but she doesn’t belong here,” I said flatly.

“Give her a week. If you don’t think she can’t cut it, then I agree, send her back to the States. But trust me, Draven. Kinsley is going to be more help than you think.”

That wouldn’t be difficult, because I don’t think she’d be any help. I needed someone I could count on, not someone counting on me. My gut said I couldn’t let her stay. Couldn’t even let her unpack. But all Brian wanted was for me to give her a chance. What could go wrong in a week? It would take me that long just to show her the ropes and explain what I needed her to do.

“One week, Brian. But if she can’t cut it on her own, then she’s fired.”

“Okay. Just don’t tell her about this conversation,” he said. “Kinsley likes to do things on her own.”

And so do I. Somehow, I am not getting what I like either.

I ended the call and tossed the phone on my bed. Then I grabbed my regular cell phone and pulled up Damien’s email. Looking at Kinsley’s photo again, I could see what Brian was saying. Her eyes were filled with confidence and strength. Maybe I was judging her too harshly.

One week I’ll know if I am wrong, but if I’m right, she won’t be here long.

When this was over, I needed to have a long talk with Damien. I had no idea why he thought I could be his personal babysitter catering to women he felt needed help. First his mother-in-law Venus a year ago and now Kinsley. There wasn’t going to be a third instance.

Oh, what I’d give for the days Damien wanted nothing to do with my business. Beats the hell out of him forgetting he’s not my boss.

CHAPTER3

Kinsley

“Diana, it’s not like I’m not coming back to the US. I have vacation time,” I explained.

But a best friend didn’t want to hear that you’ll get to see each other once or twice a year. Especially not after us having spent so much time together while I recovered from being shot. I had my own apartment, yet I hated being alone at night. Strange because before the shooting, I hated not having my own space.

“Well, you can’t blame me for worrying about you,” Diana sighed.

“I don’t.”I’m worried too. “I love you for caring. Not sure I’d be as strong as I am today if it weren’t for you.”

“You’re welcome for all the TLC,” she replied.

“Actually, I was talking about your horrible cooking. It was a huge motivator to get better,” I teased.

“Kinsley, I amnota horrible cook. You’re justimpossibleto please. If you’re not doing it yourself, then it isn’t right,” she huffed. I snickered and Diana added, “Are you trying to push my buttons, so I don’t miss you so much?”

I ignored her question and tried to bring this back to a serious conversation. “You know I must do this. I can’t…I won’t let that one moment define the rest of my life,” I said, not sure if I was trying to convince her or myself. I spent the entire flight to Tabiq questioning if I had made a big mistake. Even now as the jet was about to touch down, I still wasn’t sure.

“That moment changed your life whether you want to admit it or not.”

Looking back wasn’t going to help me right now. I had a job that I was hired to do even though I still had no idea exactly what the job entailed. I needed to stay focused and positive, or Draven Blaze might just send me right back to the US before I even had a chance to prove myself.

“Diana, the jet is about to land.”

“I didn’t hear them announce anything,” she stated.

“I’m on a private jet, remember?” I reminded her.

“Oh yes. Your surgeon's jet. That’s kind of weird, isn’t it? I mean, my doctors never fly me anywhere, never mind in their jet. Maybe he wants to be more than just your doctor. Maybe he wants to…play doctor,” she joked.

“Dr. Henderson is not only a professional, but he’s also happily married. It was my employer who made my travel arrangements.” From what I deduced; they were friends. Not my place to ask.

“Fine. Too bad. Dr. Henderson is a dream boat.”

“Know what is even better than that? He’s an amazing surgeon,” I stated.

“Fine. How about the guy you’re going to be working for? What’s his name?”
