Slowly I tore the envelope open and pulled out the paper. I was not in English. I looked at Reesa and asked, “Could you please read it to me?”

I handed it back to her and Reesa started.

MISS BECK. YOU HAVE GIVEN ME A GREAT GIFT. YOU CAME TO MY HOME. LET ME SHOW YOU PICTURES OF MY DAUGHTER. YOU LISTENED WHILE I TOLD YOU ALL THE WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT HER. YOU BROUGHT HER BACK TO LIFE FOR ME, EVEN IF ONLY FOR AN AFTERNOON. I KNOW SHE IS GONE AND I WILL SOON BE WITH HER AGAIN. BUT MY HEART IS AT PEACE AND NOW I KNOW THAT SHE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN BECAUSE I KNOW THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS CARRY HER MEMORY WITH YOU AS I HAVE.

THANK YOU. LITA

There was a small photo of Lita and her daughter that had been attached to the letter. Reesa handed it to me.

“This belongs to you,” she said.

I fought back the tears. “But I haven’t found her daughter yet,” I stated.

“And you may never find her. But you did something so wonderful for Lita. To be able to talk about your loved one who is gone is a beautiful thing. Thank you for doing that for her,” Reesa said.

I held the picture close to me. “Thank you for reading it to me.”

“As the president of Tabiq, I thank you. But as a woman who has seen her people suffer so greatly in the past, I thank you even more. You and Draven do not realize what your work here means to us. Please do not get discouraged by what you can’t change. Or the ones you can’t find. It will be difficult, but you must find the joy in what you are able to achieve. And that letter should be a constant reminder that the story might not end the way you wanted, but each story has its own ending.”

Finn added, “Lita was smiling when she asked me to make sure you received this letter. I now understand why.”

Draven reached out and took my hand in his. I wanted to remind him that we weren’t alone, but at the moment, I didn’t care.

As he held my hand he said to Reesa, “We’re not going anywhere. And as long as we have your support, we will continue to help as many people as possible.”

He was answering for me, but only because he knew what my answer was.

Reesa smiled. “Good. Now, let’s talk about your suggestions for counseling. Finn and I also spoke about that. He is working with Logan Henderson to bring in some qualified medical personnel. Once again, we don’t know how many people will take advantage of it, but at least we will have the services available if they want it.”

That was wonderful news. I smiled at Draven. “Progress.”

He nodded. “Do you remember asking me several times for a job description?”

“Yes, I do. You’ve always been vague,” I replied.

“This is why. The job is evolving. Even from when I first came here, it has changed. And for the record, I anticipate it to continue this way,” he said.

Reesa agreed. “As we continue to heal as a people, the needs change. The Henderson family has been a wonderful supporter of our economic development. Bennett has helped in ensuring that the safety of our country is in place. He handles the interviews and training for all of our law enforcement. And Logan works closely with Finn to ensure that our health care is not lacking as it was years ago. We are thrilled to have you both bringing new ideas to us and helping make them a reality.”

“How would the two of you like to join us for dinner to celebrate?” Finn asked.

Draven said, “Thanks, but we already have plans.”

“Really?” Reesa said.

I nodded. “He’s taking me out for ice cream,” I smiled.

Finn rubbed his stomach. “Now why don’t we ever do that for dinner?”

Reesa chuckled. “Oh, I would say that’s because you’re usually working at the hospital, and it is closed when you get home.”

Draven looked down at me and I nodded, knowing what he wanted to do. Then he looked at Reesa, “Why don’t you two join us too? Sounds like everyone is in the mood for ice cream.”

Finn smiled. “What do you say?" he asked his wife.

“I say I’m letting my secretary know that I’m going to be unavailable for a couple of hours.” She got up and said, “We are going now, right? Because they have a passion fruit flavor I have been dying to try.”

I chuckled. “I’m hoping they have something very chocolatey. It’s my weakness.” Draven smiled. “What?” I asked him.
