I couldn’t even keep my eyes open right now, never mind kissing her properly. You’ll have to forgive me, but I promise, I’ll make it up to you when I feel better.

Kinsley was gently stroking my hand with hers. I tried to open my eyes again, but couldn’t. I needed to relax my mind and focus on what had happened.

After kissing her goodnight, I left her room and was heading to mine when I saw TJ in the hallway. He was on the phone. I asked if everything was okay. He told me the suspect was spotted by the docks and he had word that he was about to flee the country.

TJ was heading out to stop him. Bennett wasn’t nearby so I offered to go with TJ as backup. He agreed.

We were almost there, and I remember seeing the man standing on the dock watching us. He looked so damn arrogant, hands on his hips, challenging us to come after him.

There was only one road to the dock, and it was a bumpy dirt road, but we were only seconds away from bringing the guy's ass to justice and TJ wasn’t holding back on the gas pedal. He wanted to capture this guy as badly as I did.

Out of nowhere, there was a loud noise. TJ gripped the steering wheel trying to maintain control, but the SUV flipped up into the air. I remember being slammed around and my head hitting the windshield. A second later, I was being tossed around before it came to a stop. I felt as though I had been a ragdoll which was being slammed to the ground.

Had I been thrown out of the vehicle? Had it come to a stop?

I couldn’t remember. All I saw was the stars above me.

Think. Think. What happened?

Stars, and the sound of metal being crushed, then a loud explosion and a bright red flash. Nothing after that. Nothing until I woke to Kinsley’s lovely face.

“Kinsley,” I called out softly.

“Yes, Draven. I’m here,” she replied.

“Bennett.”

“He’s in the hallway talking to Finn,” she said.

“Need Bennett.”

“Okay. I’ll get him for you,” she said, releasing my hand.

She was only gone a moment when I heard the door open again. It wasn’t Bennett’s voice beside my bed. “I hear you’re awake. How do you feel?”

“Like I got hit by a truck,” I replied.

“You were thrown from a moving vehicle, but you’re lucky to be alive. You have a broken arm, a few cracked ribs, and a hell of a lot of cuts, scraps, and abrasions. All of which will heal over time,” Finn said.

I opened my eyes, and his red hair and beard were all I saw.

“You’re not the most attractive thing to look at. Where is Kinsley?” I asked.

I felt her hold my hand again. “I’m right here.”

“I see that bump on your head didn’t affect your sense of humor,” Finn replied.

“Nope. My funny bone is fully intact,” I joked. But when I chuckled, it hurt like hell and I moaned.

“Are you okay?” she asked, sounding very worried.

“Yes, sweetheart. I’m okay. Just the universe telling me to quit joking around. Did you get Bennett?” I asked.

“I’m here,” Bennett replied.

I turned towards his voice. “How is TJ?”

Bennett didn’t respond immediately, and I knew it was serious.
