“Where are we?” I said looking through the windshield at a sea of trees in front of us.
“Did you know that there are more waterfalls in this area than anywhere in the country?”
I turned to Remy taken aback. “How do you know that?”
“I had to spend days here waiting for the best time to approach Hil. I had a lot of time on my hands.”
“So you researched the town?”
“I did a Google search.”
“And then what? You went hiking?”
“Your tone makes me think that you don’t understand how much time I had to kill.”
I leaned back in my seat and thought about it.
“So, after Hil caught you parked outside their place, you took off and did what?”
Remy thought about it. “I probably grabbed some breakfast at the diner. I might have done a hike I had marked on my hiking app.”
“You have a hiking app?”
“I downloaded it when I was here. There are so many hikes here.”
“So, let me get this straight. After making Hil think that someone was here to kill him, you would take a nature hike through the trails?”
“Firstly, there was someone here to kill him and it wasn’t me. Secondly, you don’t know how beautiful these trails are. I’m gonna show you. Come, let’s go,” he said patting my leg and then exiting the car.
Following Remy into the woods, I had to admit, he was right. I had resisted doing any of this when Hil had suggested it because, you know, bugs. But, I had never seen somewhere more beautiful in my life.
The lush trees that went on forever, the babbling stream that we crossed multiple times, they calmed me. And when after a mile we approached a pond fed by a waterfall, I was ready to sit and take it all in.
“I didn’t know places like this existed,” I admitted overwhelmed by everything.
“I thought the same thing.”
“But you constantly make fun of Cali for being from here?”
“Oh, being from a beautiful place doesn’t stop him from being a hillbilly. The two can both be true,” Remy said with a devilish smile.
I didn’t want to but I laughed.
“Cali’s a good guy,” I clarified.
“I know, I know. He’s perfect. Never once did he watch his father dismember a person. I get. He’s better than me.”
“He’s not better than you. He’s just not as bad as you make him seem. You know he could end up being your brother-in-law, right?”
“And I’ll be happy to have him. I will have to come up with a few more hillbilly jokes to add to the rotation. But it’s what you do for family,” he said with a smirk before unbuttoning his shirt.
“What are you doing?”
“You thought I brought you out here to show you the trees? We’re here to get you naked,” he said with a wicked grin.
I laughed unsure if he was serious. It turned out that he was. I watched Remy strip down to nothing and then dive headfirst into the water. I was shocked.
“Come in, the water’s perfect.”
