“Who was it?” Dillon asked scared.

“Eris. You need to get out of here fast.”

“What about the recording?”

“We won’t need it. I’ll get the ledgers and we’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Go. And on the way out, retrieve as many of the bugs you’ve planted as you can. We don’t want anyone stumbling on something by mistake and blowing everything.”

“Okay.”

“And, Dillon, once you’re out of here, I want you as far from this place as possible. Make it somewhere where no one can find you, not even me.”

“Why?” He asked with fear in his eyes.

“Just do it. I’ll contact you as soon as I can. But if you don’t hear from me, I want you to disappear and not look back.”

“Remy?” He said terrified.

“Please, Dillon. I love you. And I need you to go.”

He stared at me not wanting to leave. I wanted to kiss him. It took everything in me not to, but I knew I couldn’t. Too many things had already gone wrong.

Letting Dillon go, he pulled his cap further down his forehead and snatched devices out of planters as he left. Was this the last image I would ever see of him? I couldn’t think about this now. The only important thing was that he got out of here safely.

Heading back inside and into the living room, I saw that Armand wasn’t the only person to arrive. Talking to him in an animated conversation was Lucien. I could only imagine what they were discussing. Needing to keep Armand distracted while Dillon escaped, I headed over.

“Your soon-to-be stepfather,” Lucien said with excitement as I approached.

“Yes, we’ve met. Lucien, this is Armand.” I turned to Armand. “Lucien is my cousin from the French side of my family.”

“And his best man,” Lucien added enthusiastically.

“The French side of your family?” Armand asked looking at Lucien knowingly. “I’ve heard things.”

“All good I hope,” Lucien replied. “Were you friends with Remy’s father?”

Armand looked at me and smiled. “We were respected colleagues,” he said smugly.

“Ah,” Lucien said before pausing. “Ahhh!” He repeated as if suddenly getting his meaning. “So, you’re marrying into the family business,” Lucien said to me with a hand on my shoulder and a pat on my stomach. “Good man! Good man.”

“And you two are related how?” Armand asked Lucien.

As Lucien explained, I looked up to see Dillon snake his way up to the event planner’s van and then past it into the street. I was sure that there would be security on the feeder road leading here. But they were there to prevent people from getting in, not out.

With Dillon now safe, I turned my attention to the other part of our plan. Lucien had to have caught Armand on the way in because under his arm was a leather satchel. It had to be where he kept the ledgers.

“Lucien, can I talk to you for a moment?” I asked interrupting their conversation. I turned to Armand. “It’s best man stuff.”

“Of course,” Armand said turning to the stairs. “It was a pleasure to meet you. We’ll talk more. Perhaps there are ways our two enterprises could work together.”

“Intriguing prospect,” Lucien said with a smile. “I’ll find you later,” he told Armand as he ascended the stairs. “That was interesting,” Lucien muttered when Armand was gone.

“You two seemed to get along,” I said unimpressed.

“I’ve had a lot of practice dealing with men like him. It’s not hard to figure out what types like his want to hear.”
