“Right, so am I free to go so one of you can start following me?”

“You’re free to go. I know how to find you if I need you,” King told me without looking in my direction.

“You’re so fucking rude, King. Anyone ever tell you that?”

“A few times. Never changed anything though.” His phone rang after that and he walked away to answer it. I felt empty and I didn’t know why. I ignored the feeling and told Pretty Boy and Truck goodbye. Before I could leave the park, I felt someone behind me. I turned to see Truck walking me to my car, keeping back a few paces.

“You’re not doing a good job of tailing me, Truck,” I called over my shoulder.

“I was walking you to your car, queen. That’s all. You’re under our protection. Sumo wasn’t going to walk you out here so I am.” He took a few long-legged steps and pulled open my car door once I’d unlocked it.

“Thanks, Truck. I really appreciate it. You’re sweet.” I gave him a hug and he grinned all big and happy when I pulled back.

“No problem, queen.”

“Why do you call me that? I mean, I know I’m a queen but you say it with such purpose,” I said to him.

“You um…you remind me of my little sister. She got shot when I was a teenager. She was getting into an Uber and…someone just shot her. Her name was Queenie.” It was then that I noticed the playing card tattoo with his sister’s name on his right hand.

“Shit, I’m so sorry, Truck. I can’t imagine how it feels to lose your sister.” Thinking about losing Jay to violence like that made my mouth dry and my throat itchy. She was my only family.

“Yeah…shit messed me up for a long time. She was my best friend. You got spunk like her. I like it.”

“Aww, Truck…you’re a sweetheart.” I paused for a beat and then said, “It’s hard to believe you’ve killed people.”

“I’d kill anyone for King. That’s my brother. He’d do the same thing.”

“King shit, huh?” I asked.

“King shit,” Truck nodded. “Be careful out here, Juju.” He watched me until I got in and clicked my seatbelt in place. I liked Truck already. He wasn’t like everyone else but he had a good heart and I knew that was worth its weight in gold.

CHAPTER SEVEN

“She’s setting us up and you don’t see this shit!” Sumo’s voice boomed, bouncing off the walls of the apartment off Crenshaw we shared. I could have lived on my own. We all could have. We had more than enough money but since we grew up in a group home around each other, it felt comfortable to us. Besides, four young black men with fly, million-dollar houses in LA was a big red flag. I wanted to stay low-key as much as possible.

“If she wanted to set us up, she would have done it,” I said, refusing to raise my voice at him. If I did that, it would flip the switch on my anger and I wouldn’t be able to bring myself down from it.

“She could be an undercover,” Sumo countered, a harsh frown twisting his bold features.

“Nah. Doubt it. She does have police connects though. I think it could be beneficial,” I said.

“She’s connected with twelve because she’s one of them,” Sumo fussed.

“I don’t think so,” Truck said. “I like her vibe. She’s chill…when she’s not being crazy.”

“Sheiscrazy,” I chuckled, thinking about her quick to anger spirit. Little fiery ass.

“Damn, King she got you laughing and shit? If you want to fuck her, just say so,” Sumo said, looking at me. He was trying to get under my skin and I knew it but fuck him. I wasn’t giving in. He always pushed my buttons to see how far he could get before I had to remind his big ass that I was in charge, not him.

“Matter fact,” Sumo continued, holding a hand in the air. “If she gets into the Kings, I say all four of us get to crack into that pussy. Show her what the fuck she’s good for.”

His attempt to piss me off worked.

I stood to my feet and snatched the lit blunt from his hand, my nostrils flared and my muscles tight coils. His eyes softened and he looked up at me from his seat like a dog submitting to the alpha, as it should have been. I needed to check him but he wouldn’t like how it happened if he kept pushing my motherfucking buttons.

I couldn’t explain my anger but I didn’t like what he said about Jupiter. I saw the real her last night in her room and I realized she was more like me than I wanted to admit. She didn’t deserve thot treatment. She wasn’t on that level and if I was considering letting her into the Kings, it meant she would get the same respect we gave to our brothers.
