Warm tears pricked my eyes but I blinked them away. I knew life for Truck couldn’t have been easy growing up being neuro-atypical in Ocean View. My heart ached for the things he went through.

“You are not fucking retarded,” I snapped. I hated hearing his negative self-talk. My voice softened a little then I said, “Of course, Truck. You’re the most beautiful soul I’ve ever met. Some girl is going to be so lucky to have you as a husband. You’re amazing.”

“You think I could have a wife one day?” He smiled a little at the thought.

“Hell yeah. You’re so handsome,” I told him honestly.

“Thanks, Ju.” He went back to eating like our conversation never happened. Like it didn’t almost destroy me to come face to face with his insecurities and his unconditional love. I rubbed his back and made a promise to myself that I indeed would kill for him. He deserved all the loyalty.

My sweet king of hearts.

“The string of bank robberies is thought to be tied to the infamous street gang, Legion of Kings. Police need the public to come forward with any tips you might have assisting in the arrest and capture of anyone associated with Legion of Kings.” King shut the TV off and looked around the room at us.

There were about fifty men in the empty office building. King had properties in Inglewood that nobody would have ever guessed belonged to him. They were placeholders for the money washing businesses he wanted to start soon.

He’d called a meeting inside of an office building he owned. This space was going to be for Pretty Boy to start a cell phone and computer repair shop in. Right now, it served as a place to congregate that would hold at least fifty of us.

The news outlets were buzzing about the strings of bank robberies the Kings had done. King was over it and wanted to throw them off our scent. I liked watching him in the spotlight. He wore it so well like a crown on his head.

He couldn’t help acting like he owned this room because he did. He knew every man in there would go to war for him and the three kings.

“They’re on our motherfucking asses,” King boomed to the room. “We have to lay low. I mean that shit. Keep it local. Stay off the streets. No new members right now so hold off on that shit. You bring me a new man for consideration and you just marked that man as a victim. I will make you shoot him. So don’t bring anyone to me.” His eyes found mine amongst the men and I watched him, wondering what he was about to say.

“Juju,” he said pointedly. “What’s up with our Inglewood PD connect? That’s one of the reasons you were brought in. I need to see movement on that shit right now. Your brothers need you. Make it happen.”

“I got you, King,” I said with confidence. I’d been avoiding Marsh ever since I was officially inducted into Legion of Kings. I had to figure out how to approach him. He was getting antsy the closer it got to fall. Even though it was only July, his mind was on the gubernatorial race.

“Good. Report back tomorrow.” His eyes lingered on mine a little longer than they should have and I felt every ping and zip that shot between us. That charged connection refused to die.

After the meeting, Pretty Boy found me and pulled me to the side. “What’s up with you and Truck?” He asked as we walked outside.

“Why? What did Truck say to you?” I asked him.

“Nothing. I just saw how King has been looking at y'all lately. He said he was going to talk to you about Truck but he didn’t say shit else. You know how he’s been since y'all stopped messing around.”

“He misses fucking me. It’s understandable.” I shrugged my shoulders and Pretty Boy sighed.

“I mean…” He stopped whatever he was going to say and shook his head. “I should have reconsidered having a woman in the gang. This shit is harder than I thought it would be. I can’t even make sex jokes without shit being offensive.”

“Oh god, Pretty Boy, if you want to fuck me too just say so. Get it out in the open.” I tossed my hands in the air and he laughed.

“Do I want to? No. Would I? If you were offering…probably. I’m a nigga though.” That was the only explanation he offered. “I’m just saying, King is a lil high strung right now so I didn’t want to ask him what was going on,” he said.

“Truck has a little crush on me,” I sighed. “It’s nothing though and he’s fine. I talked to him. Nobody needs to be disciplined.”

“Okay, I can see the crush thing happening. He loves you to death.”

“I know. That’s my baby. He’s such a sweetheart. Unlike your evil ass.” I shoved him and he punched me in the arm hard enough to let me know he could hurt me if he wanted to. Asshole. “See, this is why I don’t fuck with light skin men. So emotional.”

“Whatever, Ju. You don’t fuck with anyone who ain’t King,” Pretty Boy jabbed back.

“Wow, this coming from the man who’s all lovesick of my sister? Have you even sniffed the pussy yet, Pretty Boy?” He did manage to get Jay’s number but she was so busy, she never talked to him…or Shaheed for that matter. She said he was too clingy. Her mood perked up whenever I mentioned Pretty Boy though. See, she liked bad boys too.

“Fuck you,” he said sucking his teeth. King walked up all long legs, blue jeans, and fresh ass Jordan’s and I tried not to fangirl.

“Aw shit, who got El DeBarge in his feelings?” King joked, looking at the annoyed expression on Pretty Boy’s face.
