“Jay, let me call you later. Love you, bye.”

“Love you, sissy. Bye.” The call ended and I drew in a deep breath from flared nostrils.

“What the fuck is that shit, Ju?” I gestured to the phone hiding under her thigh. “Who are you texting?”

“Why?” She snapped, standing and folding her arms. “You don’t get to know who I’m texting or why I have two phones. Mind your fucking business.” She tried to walk past me out of the room but I grabbed her arm, spinning her around. “Get the fuck off me, King. I’m not in the mood for this shit tonight. I just want to kick back and have fun.”

“You have fun letting other niggas be in your face?”

“Yup,” she said nodding.

“Don’t push my buttons right now, Jupiter,” I warned.

“Or what? Huh? The fuck are you going to do, discipline me?” She tugged her arm free from my grasp but I slammed the bedroom door. “Because doorknobs don’t work now?” She rolled her eyes and reached past me. I leaned against the door and crossed my ankles, daring her with my proximity.

“Really?” She fumed.

“Really. Now, who the fuck were you texting, Jupiter?” My voice was unusually calm for the raging storm inside of me.

“Why! Why do you care?” Her voice popped out angry and loud. “You keep checking on me around every fucking corner like I’m your woman or something. I’m not. We’re peers. You can fuck who you want and I can too.”

“So you fucking the nigga you were texting?” My chest felt like lead waiting for her to answer. I couldn’t imagine her fucking anyone else.

She was mine.

“Oh my god. What do you want from me, King?” She asked, her voice trembling. “I can’t keep doing this back-and-forth shit with you. We stopped fucking because we wanted this partnership to be clean. It’s not clean. You keep making it messy.”

“Me? By myself?” I asked, looking down at her. “You don’t run off any bitch that comes in here flirting with me?” She quieted and shrugged her shoulders. “You mean to tell me I can go out there and pick any of these girls and fuck them? Is that what you’re telling me, Jupiter?”

“No! Hell no.” She shook her head quickly.

“Why not?” I barked, my voice getting louder.

“Because…” She still refused to say what we both knew. I moved away from the door and grabbed the phone on the bed. I wanted to know who the hell she was texting. I was a jealous bastard and I wasn’t trying to hide it.

“King, stop. Give me the phone,” she said, reaching her arm in the air. I ignored her and looked at the last text notification on her lock screen.

Marsh: We can do dinner tomorrow. Carla and the kids won’t be home. Come over. I miss you, Ju.

My blood boiled until there was only sticky residue left behind in my veins.

“King, let me explain,” she said, the worry and panic clear in her voice.

“All this time you’ve been fucking Marsh?” I threw the phone at the wall in a blind rage. It clattered leaving behind a chipped dent in the drywall.

“No!” She shouted, grabbing my arm. “I’m not fucking him, just calm down and listen!”

“I swear to god, Jupiter you have a few limited seconds before I leave here and do some reckless shit.” Her small hand on my back was enough to calm me and I hated it. I wanted to blow up. I didn’t want to calm down. But Jupiter had that effect on me. I could be ready to end the world but one touch from her and I was a monk.

“He’s my biological father,” she said, her head hung low.

“What?” That was all I could manage to say. All the air had been taken out of my sail. I was a deflated heap standing there.

“Captain Marsh is my father. I’m not fucking him.”

“How?” I asked, having been reduced to one-word questions. I fell onto the bed, elbows on my knees. With a deep and heavy sigh, Ju sat beside me.

“I got locked up for shooting Stan in the shoulder when he raped me along with all his fucking friends.” Anger still wrapped around her when she talked about it. “I’d already found my father’s full name years before but I never looked him up. I didn’t know what I would find and I wasn’t ready to confront him and ask if he knew I existed.” Everything seemed quiet now. Ju’s voice, her demeanor, the energy in the room. Hell, I was even quiet.
