She chose me.

Of course, it was the best choice. I wouldn’t expect anything less from my Queen of Spades.

Juju and I were deep in conversation sprinkled with easy laughter when someone knocked on the bedroom door. I grabbed my pistol and pulled on my underwear and pants while Ju did the same, right down to grabbing her gun.

Truck and Pretty Boy stood on the other side along with all of the lower-level men who were partying. Nothing about their faces looked good. “Shit, what’s up, y'all?” I asked.

“We have another storehouse problem. The one in Baldwin Hills got hit. Two kings are dead.”

“What the fuck?” I blurted, a scowl engraving itself on my face.

“Let’s go,” Ju said, searching for her shoes. “It’s that nigga Sumo and you’re crazy if you think otherwise.”

“I know exactly who it is,” I told her before walking out of the bedroom. Sumo was losing his motherfucking mind if he thought I was going to keep looking the other way while he stole from me and now, he was killing kings?

Fuck that shit.

Bullets would fly.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Before we rode out to Baldwin Hills, King stopped me, placing his hand on my shoulder. “Put on a vest, Ju.”

“Why? I haven’t been wearing vests when I go out with y'all.”

“And that’s fucking stupid. So put one on now. We’re riding. This shit is real, not fun and games.”

“I’ll put one on if you do,” I told him, folding my arms across my chest. Maybe he was right and I did need a vest, but the thought of King getting shot or worse made my chest seize. How could he care so much about me but not at all about himself?

“Fine,” he grumbled, his jaw muscle ticking. He outfitted me with one first, then himself. I watched the thick veins in his arms flex while he fastened everything. He was painfully gorgeous in such a rugged way.

Sculpted lips, pursed together as he grabbed ammo and bags that I knew contained masks. Not the Lions heads but basic black ski masks. When King wanted to grandstand, he pulled out the lion masks but when he wanted to move in silence and get shit done? Out came the ski masks.

“We ready? Everyone is waiting for us,” I said, anxious to see if we could spread out and catch Sumo’s bitch ass.

“Ready.” He tossed me a bag and I caught it in mid-air. “Be careful, Jupiter.”

“I’m always careful, haven’t gotten killed yet,” I flashed King a bright grin that he would have normally returned. This time he didn’t.

“I’m serious.”

“Okay, King,” I said, stroking the side of his handsome face. “I’ll be careful. I have on my vest. I have my guns. You know I’m a quick shot.”

“A damn good one too,” He leaned down and I grabbed his shirt in my fist, pulling him in for the kiss I so desperately needed. When I went to pull away, King stopped me. He looked into my eyes and I saw walls crumbling to dust.

“I love you, Ju.”

I blinked in response. He said it. He said the words I’d been running from for as long as I could remember. My lashes fluttered as I tried to get my thoughts together. He never gave me the chance to respond. He grabbed his bag and walked out leaving me dumbfounded.

I rode with King while Pretty Boy and Truck rode together. There was no time to talk about feelings while we were riding out. We had to keep a lookout for Sumo. We stopped at a club near Baldwin Hills looking for anyone who’d seen anything. I didn’t think it would yield results, but King knew the streets better than me and I had to realize this was his element.

He didn’t have to pay to get inside because the bouncer at the door knew him along with Pretty Boy and Truck. They all slapped hands like they were old friends, they held up the entire line talking about nothing but when I tuned in closer to the conversation, I realized King was pumping him for information.

“Yeah man, I haven’t stopped by a four kings party in a minute. I’m always working on Friday nights,” the bouncer said after King asked why they hadn’t seen him at the apartment or the park lately.
