“Probably Sumo and whoever the fuck he’s running with now,” Pretty Boy said, anger warping his handsome face into something dark and furious. He was always so level-headed that it was strange seeing him consumed by rage.

“Let’s ride. Call all the Kings,” Pretty Boy growled. I didn’t know if Sumo understood how much he just fucked himself. Truck was already heading toward his truck, phone in hand.

“I want a price on that nigga’s head,” King said as we hurried back to his Charger. We got in, and he threw the car in drive, speeding off behind Truck and Pretty Boy. “You okay, Ju?” He quizzed, looking over at me.

“I’m fine. Are you okay?” I asked.

I was honestly far from fine. I couldn’t believe Sumo had the fucking gall to shoot at us. I knew it was him even though I didn’t see him in the car. Everyone else knew not to fuck with King. Who else would be reckless enough to do a fucking drive-by outside of a crowded club?

Sumo.

“Yeah.” He pushed out a slow breath and turned down a street, following Truck. Something in King’s voice wasn’t right. Even from that one-word answer, I knew it. That one word twisted my stomach in a knot.

We stopped in front of another one of King’s properties. This one was on Crenshaw. It was going to be Truck’s auto-detailing business.

I watched Pretty Boy and Truck rush inside but King didn’t. He sat staring out of the window for a few beats. “I don’t want to kill my brother, Ju,” he said.

“I know…but at this point, King what other option is there? Let him back in and watch your backs all the time?”

“No, you’re right. I know what I have to do it just…hurts.” I heard the pain in his voice but it came from somewhere else. When he got out of the car, I noticed a thick smear of deep red on his seat.

Panic sank into the pit of my stomach.

I scrambled out of the car just in time to see King stumble then fall to the ground in pain.

“King!” I shrieked, running through quicksand to get to him, or at least that’s what it felt like. “Truck! Pretty Boy!” My voice was a high and tight scream that burned my throat on the way out.

Truck was the first one out of the building. He dropped to his knees beside King who was, of course, trying to fight through the pain.

“Shit, King where are you hit?” Truck asked, looking over his brother.

“My side…right at the bottom of the vest,” King grunted out through clenched teeth. With trembling hands, I started to unstrap his vest.

“I got it, Ju,” Truck said quietly.

“No! I’ll do it,” I snapped, fumbling with the vest as tears made my vision blurry. Hot, sticky fear clung to my insides as I slid the vest off his body and looked at the bullet hole just above his hip. It was leaking bad.

“Fuck!” Pretty Boy cursed once he saw the situation. “I’m going to fucking kill Sumo myself,” he growled. My muscles tensed at his words. I’d never seen him so livid. This wasn’t my brother Pretty Boy. This was Pretty Boy the monster. The savage.

At first, I was sure he was the king of diamonds because he was the pretty one but now, I saw the real reason. Diamond is one of the hardest substances on earth and there was no harder look than the one in Pretty Boy’s eyes right then when he saw King on the ground bleeding.

When my brain clicked back into place, I pulled my phone out and called the only person who could help me right then.

“Jay…I need you,” I breathed into the phone. “King, he’s been shot.” I refused to let the stinging tears fall. I couldn’t. I had to make sure he was okay because I needed him.

I loved him.

“Oh my god, Jupiter! Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, just please help him. Are you off yet?”

“Yeah, I just got off. Where are you? Don’t move him. I’ll come to you.” She sounded panicked too because even though the back and forth between King and I got on her nerves, she liked him. Everybody liked King. He was a loveable asshole who care deeply about the people he loved.

Love…

The word made my throat tight. I just admitted to myself that I loved King and now he was bleeding on the ground.

I gave Jay the address of Truck’s soon-to-be auto-detailing shop and ended the call. Jay said we needed to move him somewhere stable if we could get him there without disturbing him too much.
