“Please…take care of him, Jane.” I pulled her in for a hug because she was the only one besides King that I could trust with my deepest secret right then. “I love him,” I said in her ear. She pulled back and looked at me, astonishment on her pretty face.

“He’ll be fine, Juju. I promise. You know your sister got them hands.” She smiled at me a little then went back to work with Pretty Boy at her side.

Truck and I went outside and stood on the sidewalk in silence. Cool night air blew a breeze around us carrying with it the sounds of the city. People laughing and talking. Everyone moving around like the world was normal when I was out of my mind with worry.

“Hey,” Truck said, nudging me. “King is going to be fine. Jay is a great doctor.”

“I know. I just hate how easy it was to hit King. He could have died and he had on a fucking vest, Truck.” I stripped out of my own vest and tossed it to the ground.

“King has been shot before, Ju. We all know how this shit goes. This is why we were worried about letting you in. Not just because you’re a girl,” he said, “But because we all saw the way King looked at you. At least I saw it. Sumo must have seen it too. He was the most jealous out of all of us.”

“Jealous?” I said, looking at Truck.

“Yeah. Sometimes, I look at the four kings like rowdy-ass kids. King was always the oldest. The ringleader. We all follow behind him because he’s that cool older brother who always made sure we were straight. We all wanted his attention.” Truck stopped talking for a moment and I realized he was trying to get his thoughts together. I held his hand in mine and squeezed it a little, encouraging him. “I think…Sumo wanted King’s attention more than me and Pretty Boy. I think when Sumo saw you, he knew it was a wrap.”

“Damn, Truck. You think it all comes down to jealousy?” I asked him, my head starting to throb from the stress of seeing King shot and bleeding. Truck nodded then brought my hand to his lips, kissing me there. It was short and sweet but I still shot him a look.

“Sorry, Queen Ju. I didn’t mean it like that.”

“I believe you, Truck,” I sighed laying my head on his shoulder. Pretty Boy came out of the shop and stood beside us. I reached over and held his hand too. “How’s it going?” I asked.

“Your sister is bossy as fuck when she’s operating.”

“Is she? I’ve never seen her in action.” I smiled thinking about soft-spoken little Jay being bossy. Maybe some of my attitude rubbed off on her.

“She is,” Pretty Boy nodded. “I love that shit.”

“Oh god,” I laughed, tipping my head back. It felt good to laugh after being terrified moments ago. “You’re a fool, Pretty Boy.”

“I’m serious, Juju. I don’t care how long it takes, I’m snagging your sister. Whatever you and King have? I’m trying to have that with Jay.” He looked over his shoulder at her hard at work inside.

“She’s going to block you around every corner. Just letting you know,” I told him with a slight shrug.

“That’s cool, I know how to deal with that. I’m on her ass though.” He folded his arms and stared at Jay through the window like a fucking creep. I shoved him and he grabbed me, hitting my sides playfully.

“Back up, Pretty Boy,” Truck said in my defense.

“Jesus, now I have to deal with fucking head almighty. Please don’t headbutt me, Truck. We’ve already had one injury tonight,” Pretty Boy joked with a gorgeous smile.

“Fuck you, nigga. Fucking, light skin Ken ass.”

“Oh, for real?” Pretty Boy held up his fists and just like that those two were play-fighting again. I shook my head as I watched them for a few minutes.

Damn, having brothers really did help. Without those two, I would have been lost when King got shot. I would have called Jay, of course, but who would have calmed me down? Took my mind off of it and make me laugh?

That was all Truck and Pretty Boy.

The King of Hearts and the King of Diamonds.

My forever brothers.

We got King stitched up and resting at the apartment and I was forever thankful when Jay said she would stay too so she could look over King while he healed. Pretty Boy just about lost his damn mind when he realized Jay would be staying the night.

“You need anything, let me know.” I overheard Pretty Boy talking quietly to Jay. I smirked a little before walking into King’s room where he was sleeping comfortably. It took a while to stop the bleeding without Jay having access to all the supplies and medicines she was used to at work, but she made do and King would be fine. He’d have to heal for weeks before he was at 100% though.

I sat beside him on the bed. His blood had become stubborn stains under my nails as I looked down at my hands.
