“It doesn’t look like nothing’s wrong.”

“I just want to talk about some things, that’s all.”

“What things?”

“Okay…” Inhaling a deep breath, I questioned, “Beau, are we moving into one of your parents’ estates?”

“Not unless you don’t want to.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“What are you expecting me to say?”

“I’m not sure.” I shrugged. “Why didn’t you tell me that was a possibility to begin with?”

“It has no relevancy to us now.”

“We’re getting married in four days. Isn’t this something we should have talked about before?”

“We’re talking about it right now.”

“Only because I brought it up.”

He cocked his head to the side. “Did my mother say something to you to bring this on?”

“No,” I firmly stated. “My mother did. She’s expecting us to move into your family’s Charleston property.”

“I’m not seeing the issue. Don’t you want to be closer to your parents? Ethan?”

“I do, but I also have a very important job to think about. You’re talking about uprooting my entire life.”

“Sweetheart, you could open your own law practice. You don’t need to work for anyone else.”

My eyes widened. “Sounds like you’ve already given this some thought?”

“Not any more than you have.” He sat back on his legs. “I just assumed you’d love nothing more than to move back to your childhood state. Other than your job, what else is keeping you in California?”

“I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just don’t like to be blindsided by my mom of all people. If the roles were reversed, I’m almost positive you wouldn’t appreciate it either.”

By the serious expression on his face, he was considering it. “You’re right. I wouldn’t.”

“Okay… so what is this that I’m hearing you’re basically trying to knock me up on our honeymoon?”

“I’m not going to pretend I’m not excited to have a family with you.”

“Don’t you think we need to talk about that first?”

“I imagine we would after we were married.”

“Again,” I stressed. “Isn’t that something we should discuss before we walk down the aisle? Because I’d like to be married for a little bit before we go down that road.”

“Elizabeth, we’ve been on and off for the past ten years. How much more time do you need?”

“You say it like it’s a bad thing?”

“Sweetheart.” He lovingly smiled at me. “Why don’t you just get off the pill, and we leave it up to fate to see what happens?”

“Getting off the pill is not fate, Beau. That’s preparing.”
