“He’s a dragon.” I shrugged. “It’s the mine shaft. Hence, all the gold. Try thinking of your beast.”

“He’s a boar,” Harry finally admitted.

“Think of your boar then.”

He turned around, concentrating, and within minutes, his eyes changed color, and the tusks erupted from his wrists. He looked at me, and I could see the anger and rage fueling the beast in his small yellow eyes.

“Come for me,” I said.

He ran toward me, brought his hands together, and then spread them out, slashing the tusks in front of my face. The sound cut the air. I stepped to the side at the last minute.

“Again,” I shouted.

We ran through the exercise several times when we both were stopped cold by a chill in the air. Something was in the forest.

A high-pitched whine came from Harry. It sounded like a mass of crickets and seemed to undulate and even writhe. Multiple and distinct tones collided together in a nails-on-the-chalkboard effect. I fell to my knees, holding my head. “Stop,” I shouted. “Harry, stop. Grab your fucking amulet.

The sound continued, and whatever was in the forest fled.

“Stop,” I yelled again.

Harry grabbed the necklace around his neck, and the sound faded into the night, propagating in silent waves.

“Bloody, fucking hell.” My ears continued to ring. “I think we found your special skill.”

“What was that?” he said. “In the woods.” He was pale, and a sheen of sweat covered his brow. “It felt awful. Like death.”

We made our way into the trees to find another dead bull. “Bloody hell,” Harrison said, kneeling down by the animal to examine it.

“It’s the Dearg Due.”

He shook his head.

“We’ll have to get rid of this,” I said, pointing to the crumpled animal.

“How?”

“We’ll throw it in the ocean.”

He looked around. “I still feel it. Not as strong, but it’s complete despair.”

I felt it, too, and it meant one thing.

She was still watching.

ChapterTwenty-Four

It was still dark when I arrived at Sam’s hotel room in Milford Haven. He let me in, closing the door behind him. “You must be exhausted,” he said.

I lay down on his bed. “I am.”

“Have you decided what you’re going to do?” he asked. “This news changes everything.”

“I need to talk to Morgan.” I closed my eyes. “There’s no evidence Havard’s involved, but it seems more than a coincidence and worth checking out. Have they found any more evidence on Rhys’ property to corroborate the backpack?”

“I don’t know. The police have been tight-lipped and are offering no information. They let Rhys go home, which suggests there was no additional evidence.”
