"Then look again, Einstein," I hear Ava say excitedly, sounding exactly like Tucker does whenever he's got a joke he's bursting to tell. She comes closer, hopping from one foot to the other as she pushes the bear closer, saying, "Nate, look again," before turning the bear around to show Tucker, who is now standing next to them.
"OMG bro, is this a joke?" says Tucker, looking down at Ava.
Ava is now shaking her head, desperately trying not to say anything and she presses her lips together tightly as if the words are about to jump free. I look over and realize why everyone is looking so bewildered.
"Bella, don't joke with me now; is this true?" Nate asks.
"Will someone please let us in on the big secret, please?" Harper and Riley say in unison from the foot of the bed.
Nate turns the bear around to the group and shows them the big ‘World’s Best Daddy’sign the teddy bear is holding.
There's a collective whoop and squeal around the room as Nate pulls me onto him to kiss me.
Nurse Laura comes rushing in. "Is everything okay?" she asks anxiously.
"Better than okay. I'M GOING TO BE A DADDY!" Nate yells excitedly, the emotions ripping through his face.
Gabe runs up to Nate and hugs him. "Congratulations, bro."
"I'm so sorry you found out this way, I wanted to tell you both in private," I say, pulling Gabe into another hug. I go to release him, but then I hear him whisper softly, "Don't worry, you told me last night in your sleep. Now I have got someone else to watch over," in my ear.
I'm so relieved that for once Gabe is on our side and that, as awful as this whole ordeal was, it had a happy ending. I can’t help but hug him tighter and for the first time ever....
Gabe hugs me back.
