“I-I think so.”

“Did you look around?”

“I did, upstairs. It’s empty, but the door…it was wide open.”

“Stay here, Parker. Chow, you stay too!” Raven commanded as he hurried to the back door.

“What’s happening?” She followed him to the arched threshold.

“Lock the door behind me. Stay with Chow. Right here, understand?” His pensive gaze made her heart skip a beat.

“I will.”

He stepped through the back door and she secured it. She could hear his footsteps through the open window as he walked in a hurried pace around the side of the house.

She stood in the center of the kitchen, holding the ends of the belt of the robe. Chow stood next to her. His tail was stiff and his gaze remained on the door where his human departed.

Seconds turned into minutes until finally a pounding came on the door. She almost jumped out of her skin. She pulled back the curtain and saw Raven on the step. She opened the door. “What am I missing?”

He tore his fingers through his hair. “Sorry. I’m sure this is all a bit confusing.”

“A bit? Try a lot.” She closed and locked the door behind him.

“I can explain.”

“Please do, starting with telling me if someone was here…in the house.”

His shoulders slumped some and the crinkles around his eyes deepened. He motioned for them to sit at the table.

“I’ll stay standing. Thank you.”

He sat, leaning back in the chair. She didn’t know every layer of Raven, but she could see he was beside himself. His hands were clenched into tight fists. His mouth was thin. The black T-shirt hugged his chest that heaved and fell like he’d run a couple of miles while he was outside.

She cleared her throat. “Raven, is there something I should be aware of?”

His glistening gaze remained on her. She couldn’t believe under the circumstances that she felt the apex of her thighs warm. His gaze moved down her and she realized the front of the robe had gaped open. She didn’t bother with adjusting the fabric.

“It could be nothing,” he said in a low voice.

“But whateveritis could be something.”

He rubbed his eyes. “Long story short, two months ago, one of the servers at Crew and Brew was attacked. She managed to fight her attacker off and he ran away. We thought it was a one-time thing, maybe someone had spotted her at the bar and she rejected them. However, weeks later another woman was attacked. She was coming home late one night and a man popped out from the shadows. Farrah too managed to fight him off. A witness saw a suspicious man wearing all black on Snowbleed Mountain so my brothers and I took off in search of him.”

“Are the women okay?” Her throat hurt.

He blew out a long breath. “They’re fine. A couple of the strongest women I know. While Dean and I were searching the mountain a bomb went off inside an abandoned car.”

“That was what injured Dean, right?”

He nodded. “We don’t know what the suspect’s intentions were, but we’ve asked that everyone be vigilant about their comings and goings until we catch him.”

She folded her arms over her waist, looking around the room, trying to clear her mind. “Why would he come inside here?”

“That’s the million-dollar question.”

“You found something outside, didn’t you?”

His lips thinned. “A foot print.”
