She laid her tools aside. “You need to tread carefully. Be cautious about her feelings. Maybe your proposal was exactly what Gianna needed at that precise moment.”
“I think I fucked up royally.”
She patted his shoulder. “We all do.” She pulled off her gloves. “I’m done. I’ll go write you that prescription and you can get dressed. Take your time.”
Later, Carter tossed around Maya’s advice, but munching noises distracted him. “Do you have to eat that right now?” He shot Blue a scowl across the seat of the truck.
He bit into the cheeseburger and said around a mouthful, “I bought you one too. It’s in the bag.”
Carter couldn’t even think about eating. “Maya said I should stick with mostly fluids today.” He looked through the side window as they drove onto the country road toward home, squinting when they hit a bump and a pain shot through his backside. “Take it easy, will you?”
“Oh, does your ass hurt?” Blue laughed and shoved the last bite of his burger into his mouth.
“You’re really pushing your boundaries,” Carter grumbled.
“Have you heard from her yet?”
“Who?”
“Seriously?” Blue shook his head.
“No.” Laying his head back, he watched the fields pass. His head was swimming, but at least he felt better than he did that morning.
“Why don’t you just send her another text, explaining that you were wasted and made a mistake. Then you can leave this all behind you, except for holidays when you’ll be the laughingstock at all the parties.”
“Yeah, I guess that’s an option.”
“Options? You do realize the only two options are coming clean or marrying her?” Blue put up a sensible argument.
“I don’t want to be a dick.”
“I think you already managed that by asking her the question in the first place.”
“Why the hell didn’t you stop me?” Carter sighed.
“You didn’t ask for my permission.” Blue swiped a glance at Carter. “Well, when you decide what the hell you’re going to do, let me know so I can make sure to be far away when Ma finds out.”
