Tristan’s mouth dropped open. “Like, actually ripped it off?”

“He ate it, too,” Evie said with a grimace, though she almost laughed at the way Tristan’s face blanched.

Jakkar’s lips flattened in a harsh line. “We have brought a healer with us, but if you require a healing pod, we will need to visit the infirmary.”

Cazar shook his head. “We are fine. Toroq has seen to our health.”

“Toroq?” Kylok asked, nodding his head a moment later. “Alejandra didn’t think it had left.”

“It didn’t,” Cazar confirmed.

Tristan looked between them all. “But I thought the Hyde fucker was here this whole time?”

Evie made a face. “Well, I might have lied to you a little bit, just to give Cazar some brownie points to impress you. Although, I guess I wasn’t lying, so there’s no need to bring that up ever again.”

Tristan glared at her. “You’re lucky that I love you and that you’ve clearly gone through something just now.”

“So have you,” Evie admitted. “Stephen, my ex? He was your friend, Seth.”

Tristan bit out a harsh curse as she began to tell their small group everything that happened leading up to Stephen’s death.

Once she was finished, the men around her were silent.

“This is troubling news indeed.” Jakkar pursed his lips. “I did not wish to say this until I had a solid answer, but we have had difficulty with our transmissions to Earth over the last few days. One of our emissaries reached out an hour ago with intel that some Aragnokans have been working with U.S. officials to steal human women and children and traffic them to other worlds. I fear this senator, Stephen’s father, may have been one of those responsible.”

Evie gasped in shock.

“Stephen told me his dad was doing something vile, but I didn’t believe him.”

Stealing women and children? Where were they taking them? And how were they getting them off of Earth without people knowing?

“I cannot be sure if the male’s claims about his father are true, not until we discover every individual responsible for these atrocities. But our alliance with Earth is now in further jeopardy. We were already on the brink of terminating our treaties after their soldiers attacked this very lab only two months ago.” Jakkar took a shuddering breath. “Now we have fended off another attack, and our own males are responsible for kidnapping humans. This is a mess.”

Kylok cleared his throat. “My friend, Daemon, was to visit Alejandra’s old home and speak with her sister today, but we have not heard from him since. I do not believe he has reported back to his post, either.”

“It could just be a delay in transmission,” Jakkar said softly.

Kylok shook his head. “I doubt that is the case for either of us, father. I would not be surprised if Earth has declared war against us. We have no way of currently knowing what is happening there. There could already be unrest, and Daemon may be in trouble.”

“It would be foolish of the humans to attack our warriors.” Jakkar frowned. “We have the might of several planets on our side.”

“I did not say it would be wise,” Kylok added. “But these coincidences are far too great to ignore. We must remain alert.”

Jakkar nodded. “For now, the humans visiting will be monitored more closely. Hopefully, no one else has ideas of grandeur.”

Evie was in a better state of mind by the time she and Cazar made it back to the mansion. Her clothing was crusty and smelled, her hair felt limp, and despite Cazar’s blood healing her, her body ached.

Cazar led her to their private bathroom. They had a large sink and vanity, a shower that shot out a cleansing foam from the showerhead as opposed to water, and a private bathing pool that was constantly filled with warm, soapy water.

She still had no idea how the water cycled itself out, but she didn’t care. That damned thing was calling her name.

Stopping in front of the sink, she couldn’t help but notice their appearances in the large mirror hanging above the vanity. They both looked like shell-shocked warriors coming home from battle. Blood and grime was matted to their bodies.

She was oh-so grateful when Cazar removed her clothing for her before stripping out of his own. Taking a rag from the vanity, he ran it under the sink before he began to clean some of the excess blood from her body.

Evie shivered, nipples pebbling from the contrast in temperature as the cool, damp cloth touched her suddenly heated skin.

Sex should be the last thing on her mind, but it wasn’t. She’d almost died. Cazarhaddied. The thought ignited something in her brain, and there was so much adrenaline in her system that she suddenly needed an outlet.
