“Nothing,” I answer slowly, shaking my head.

I don’t trust what I’m seeing.

“There is definitely something out there.” Astra points off into the distance, strange shapes suddenly visible in front of the full moon. “Drones?”

She stands up, seemingly uncaring that she is completely naked, and walks to the edge of the terrace. “A kite? We are on the beach, so maybe, from this angle…No, not kites.”

I move from the chair to stand behind her, my pulse speeding up as my supernatural eyesight brings clarity to what Astra can only see as small, hazy shapes.

“An… an inflatable Halloween decoration?”

“No.” My tail coils around Astra’s waist and pulls her tight to my body.

There are five shadows moving across the moon. Each one appears to have wings that flap against the glowing light and a long, tapered tail that flicks and coils behind each of them. Still not trusting what I’m seeing, I squint into the darkness.

“What is it then?” Astra asks as she wraps her arm around me to get even closer. “They… they kind of look like—”

“Gargoyles,” I whisper. The memories that have haunted me for decades—images of a war, flashes of creatures I call my brothers—suddenly gain perfect lucidity.

These aren’t just any gargoyles, I realize.

“They are my brothers.”
