“Well, sir, that’s the thing. It’s lunch now and I’ve got a free after, plus I’m waiting for my brother to ring me to let me know if he’s free for a chat,” I say with a shrug, rising to my feet.

I see his face pale at the mention of my brother. Ah, so heisbothered about Frost. Even though he played it off like he didn’t give a crap, that’s good to know.

“Goodbye, Mr. Chambers,” he waves his hand at me like I’m a small dog, the urge to gnash my teeth at him is heavy as I glare at him. I stride through the office, not bothering with a goodbye to the secretary glowering at me, before I step out seeing the quad buzzing with activity.

“I know you’re a cunt, but this?!” a voice roars from behind me, and I’m pushed. I manage to keep myself upright as I whirl around, coming face to face with Brantley who looks like he’s spewing fire from his ears.

“I knew she’d go running to you, the little snitch,” I hiss, turning my back on him and heading to the parking lot. I’ll head to the diner to get some food, because like fuck can I be assed dealing with the vultures now.

“She didn’t come running to me, I sought her out and fucking hell, bro, I thought you were trying to get her on side?” he snaps, pushing me sideways this time. I manage to steady myself again, snarling at him. He doesn’t back off though, he keeps pushing me from the side.

“Brantley, back the fuck off,” I snarl, losing my patience with my friend.

“Or what, Kylo?” he snaps, “You gonna tie me to the flagpole in my underwear too?”

“She shouldn’t have kept pushing me,” I snarl. “You know, like you’re doing now.” I lengthen my strides, covering the distance quickly so he has to jog to keep up with me. I unlock my car, then my eyes get drawn to the ground.

“Where the fuck are my tires?” I roar, spinning around in a circle. Brantley stands there with his mouth on the floor. I stop moving when I see Shadow standing on the opposite side of the lot with a can in her hand, and the pile of tires beside her as she curls her upper lip in a snarl. “Don’t fucking do it, Shadow,” I warn her, the words rattling in my chest.

She tilts her head to the side, a smirk tipping the edges of her lips as I watch her dump the can of gasoline.

“Don’t you fucking dare!” I roar, bolting forward. I’m forced to a stop as the lighter connects with the gas and my tires go up like a bonfire. The smell of burning rubber fills the air, and she looks me up and down, growling, before spinning on her heels and disappearing out of sight.

“You know what? You two are a perfect fucking match,” Brantley chuckles as he stares at the pile of goop that’s now on the lot. The smell has me wanting to gag as teachers rush to find out what’s going on.

“She told me she didn’t want me to save her and it was just a fuck,” I admit, and his brows scrunch together in a frown. “But what really got under my fucking skin is; one, she said that asshole was better; and two, she didn’t believe me when I told her about what her father has planned for her.”

“You really told her?” he gasps, his head pulling back in shock. “While you were arguing?”

“I didn’t mean to blurt it out, but she gets under my skin and pushes me to the point I can’t stop myself.” My shoulders slump as I realize what an asshole I’ve been. “You know what I think of her, and her words were like knives to my soul.”

“I can see you’re feeling guilty over it now,” he says, stepping up to me. “But this is gonna make you feel worse. Lux has gone and left Sam a letter saying something happened and she needs to deal with it.” My brows hit my hairline as my stomach spasms like I’ve taken a blow to the gut.

“She’s on her own dealing with her father now, and you’ve just shown her you can be just as bad as him.” His voice is low, I only just hear him as white noise fills my ears.

Sirens cut through the air, pulling me back to the present. The teachers are trying to keep everybody away from the blob of rubber, their heads snapping to my car on bricks as they look back at the smoldering substance.

“So, what you gonna do?” he asks as I stare into the distance, my mind racing when my phone pings in my pocket. I take it out, my brows jumping as I read the text from Frost. I lift my eyes to my friend.

“I need you to give me a ride home.”

SAM

Irub furiously at my red wrists, I can’t believe he had the balls to tie me to the fucking flagpole. I don’t get him, why does he think he can keep saying the shit he does, but then does crap like this? The boy is giving me a serious case of whiplash. Lux’s words flash across my mind, and I scoff because like fuck am I going to make this shit easy on him now. I pace the length of the house as my mind races with ways I can get my own back on him. He thinks doing that to me is going to teach me a lesson. You’ve got another thing coming, asshole, because I love the taste of sweet revenge. My phone rings in my pocket, and I pull it out, dread filling me as I see the name flash across the screen.

“Hello,” I say with apprehension, my mind screaming at me to put the phone down and run.

“You’re needed at the Kaden, make sure you’re presentable,” my father growls down the line, and my heartrate kicks up a notch as Kylo’s words from the locker room slam into me.

“Why?” I blurt without thinking.

“Don’t test me, girl, you know what will happen if you do,” he says nastily, and I hear my mom sob behind him. Guilt hits me like a wrecking ball. If I don’t do as he asks, he’s going to take it out on her because I’m not there.

“Okay, I’ll be there,” I say with a stronger tone, even though I feel anything but. “Dad, I’ve heard some stuff today.”

“What is it?” he demands, his annoyance making it clear he would rather be done with this conversation.
