“Poison, you feeling okay?” he asks, his forehead scrunched up with concern. I smile wide and nod my head, bounding over to him and grab hold of his hands to yank him to his feet.

“Let’s do it again,” I say with a squeal of excitement. “I know I can run it faster than I just did,” I yell as I start to pull him back towards the starting line.

“What’s going on with you?” he growls, pulling back on my arms. Pain spreads through my shoulders, tearing a yelp from my throat, and forcing me to let go of him. I put my hands on my hips, and he glances over me like he’s looking at someone else, making me quirk my brow and tap my foot.

“Was there any need for that, dude?” I ask, folding my arms across my chest. “I only want to do the run again.”

“What the hell is happening, Poison? We just did it and we both barely made it over the finish line,” he says in a curt tone. “Now you think you could run it again?”

“Don’t you feel that?” I ask, rubbing at my arms. “I feel like I’ve been electrified.”

“Poison?” My head whips around so fast, my body falls to the side trying to keep up with the momentum. “Are you feeling okay?” Mr Haims asks with a frown, even Ajax has a look of concern on his face.

I bob my head in a nod, a huge smile breaking out across my own face. “Yes!” I squeal, and both of their expressions match each other in surprise or horror, making me burst out laughing. “I’m all good.”

“You thinking the same thing as me?” Ajax says to the teacher, his eyes not straying from me. “Infirmary?”

Mr Haims nods, and I jump back with a gasp of shock as he glares down at me. What the fuck? His hands grip the top of my arms almost painfully as he pulls me towards him. I yell out in protest.

“Get off me, Sir!” I bellow as he pulls me across the field. “What the hell are you doing?”

He doesn’t bother to respond, he just keeps dragging me towards the buildings. I fight with all I have, a grunt of frustration passing my lips as I try and dig my feet into the ground but they slide everywhere because of the mud.

“Let me go!” I scream, the anger at being manhandled becoming too much.

Mr Haims flies away from me, his body somersaulting through the air like he has an invisible wire attached to him and someone has just yanked on it.

My hand covers my mouth as I watch him hit the floor with a thud; everyone has stopped what they were doing and are openly staring at me now. Even Ajax looks between the crumpled heap that’s the teacher and me, his brows scrunched tightly together in a frown. He steps towards me and I back up as quickly as I can, holding my hand up to keep him at a distance. He freezes in his spot, eyes narrowed on me.

“I’m fine!” I hiss. “I don’t need to go to the infirmary.”

“Poison, we really need to take you to the infirmary,” Ajax says with concern. He takes a step closer, but it’s slower this time as he keeps his eyes on me. I pucker my lips and lift a brow. “I know you say you don’t need to go. But the influx of adrenaline isn’t right.”

“What’re you talking about? I’m fine, there’s nothing wrong,” I insist. “Just because I feel like a livewire at this moment doesn’t mean anything is wrong with me.”

“Poison,” he pleads with me.

I spin around, turning my back on him with a huff. Exhaustion washes over me out of nowhere, and I stumble to the side. My muscles scream in agony and I fall, my legs have given up on me. The ground is coming up to meet me, but it’s like someone has sucked all the energy out of my body and I brace myself for my face smashing into the grass beneath me. Then everything goes dark.

“I’m telling you now, Damon, that wasn’t normal!” a voice snaps angrily.

I can’t make out who it is because it feels like there is cotton wool in my ears. I try to open my eyes but they don’t move, and panic begins to press in on me. I try my arms this time and, again, I’m met with nothing.

“Damon, her powers are showing themselves. That’s the only explanation for her throwing me across the training ground.”

“Damon,” a voice says in a softer tone. “Ajax, please call me by my official name here in this institute. Especially when someone is ear-dropping on us.”

“What?” two voices ask in confusion.

“You can open your eyes now, Poison, I know you’ve been listening in,” he says. I try to open my eyes again, and slowly they prize open. My eyes water, and it’s like I’ve just pulled apart industrial-strength Velcro attached to my lashes.

“I…” My mouth feels drier than the Sahara Desert. Ajax passes me a glass and I greedily gulp down the water. “Why am I here?”

“How’re you feeling, child?” Mr Skullmyer asks, taking the empty chair at the side of my bed. He’s smiling at me like a father would do their child. “You’re here because you passed out.”

“But…”
