“We think your powers are trying to manifest, but the influx of power on someone who has never had it was too much for your body to handle. So we asked the oracle to come to do a reading on you while you were out. The thing is, she didn’t feel any aura of power off you,” he says gently, taking hold of my hand in his, giving it a soft pat and smiling down at me. “But now there’s nothing.”

“It wasn’t me, Sir,” I whisper, and my words feel like they’re trying to catch in the back off my throat.

“What do you mean?” Ajax grunts, glowering at me with his arms across his chest. “I know it was you.”

“I saw a shimmer before Mr Haims flew, I think,” I say, confused. “There were some witches on the far side of the training fields doing magic.”

“You’re lying!” he thunders, moving closer to the edge of the bed. “I know what I felt when you screamed. It was an influx of power, I felt it when you screamed into the sky too.”

“With all due respect, Sirs,” I say, looking at the headmaster and the battle training teacher. “I have never shown an ounce of having any magic in me, my aunt has had me tested enough times. So, I am telling you, honestly, what happened to Mr. Haims had nothing to do with me.”

They all openly stare with puzzled expressions; with a huff I quickly sit up and throw my legs over the edge of the bed.

“What’re you doing, child?” Mr Skullmyer asks with concern. “You can’t leave the infirmary until someone has cleared you.”

“With all due respect, Sir. I am not sitting here with these two throwing daggers my way like I’m psychotic.” I find my trainers tucked under the bed, thankfully I’m still in my workout clothes. I quickly stuff my feet into them, not bothering to do up the laces.

All three men are eyeing me suspiciously as I grab hold of the doorknob and pull. A woman screams, a metal tray crashing to the ground and I cover my eyes from the sound. My head throbs and the woman pants with a hand to her chest in terror. With an apologetic smile, I rush out of the room.

My legs feel like jelly as I fight to keep myself upright and moving forward. I can’t sit there and be scrutinised like that. Thankfully, the headteacher seemed less inclined to think I was at fault. The stone floor echoes my footfalls, making it sound like there are more people in the corridor than there is. I push through the massive double doors at the end of the hall and nearly fall out into the Academy grounds.

CHAPTERFIVE

Voices sound all around me, but my eyes can’t seem to adjust to the new environment from the darkened hallway.

“Oh. My. God,” a voice says, though I would call it more of a whisper-yell. “That’s the crazy bitch from earlier.”

“Anika!” Someone else shouts, and my eyes begin to clear as I turn in a small circle.

The front of the infirmary is packed full of students; a group of guys are playing ball, while a group of girls stand off to my side, cackling in the corner like a group of demented fairies.

“Looks like she got away with it.”

“What’re you on about?” I ask, turning my attention on a black-haired girl with pink tips on the ends of her hair. She scoffs with a sadistic smile on her face and flips her hair back.

“What’s it to you, freak?” another voice growls, and I whip around looking for the owner.

Before I have a chance to really see anything, I’m yelling, my arms flailing around as I’m pushed backwards. My back hits the ground, hard, pulling a shriek from me, and my eyes begin to water as pain radiates up my spine. A clawed hand wraps in my hair, making me hiss as pain spreads over my scalp. Another girl with blonde hair, identical to the one a second ago, yanks me to my feet and I grab her wrist, seeing the green glow of her eyes.

“Get it through your head, freak, we don’t want you here,” she spits, yanking my face closer to hers. “And if I ever see you eyeing up my boyfriend again,” she hisses, “I’m going to gouge your eyes out.”

A sharp claw slides down the side of my cheek and I try my best not to squirm so it doesn’t cut me. But I can’t stop the tear escaping the corner of my eye, showing her just how terrified I really am.

“I don’t know who you’re on about,” I say with a pleading tone. “But I promise I won’t look at anyone again, just let me go.”

“Look, everybody,” she shouts with glee. “A Draken is begging me to leave her alone.”

Laughs and shouts of excitement fill the air as the student body surrounds us on all sides.

“You see, they’re not as all powerful as they like everyone to believe.”

Her grip in my hair is so painful, I yell out when she tugs again—much to her delight—and her eyes narrow on me. I can see the cogs in her mind working as she smiles wide; my terror reaching the stratosphere when I see the tips of fangs on her teeth.

“Anika Crawstrike!” booms through the area, making her hold on me drop and I hit the floor with a thud. “Leave Miss Draken alone.”

My eyes look up to the sky, surprise filling me when I see Miss Havendoom floating toward us before she slowly descends to the ground.

She stops in front of me and the girl steps away like she hasn’t just assaulted me. My eyes meet the teacher’s; I was hoping to see something warm and friendly but the look of disgust on her face has my stomach rolling.
