“Thank fuck!”The words flutter across my already painful mind, my eyes are watering because of how much pain I’m in. But I can’t mistake the gleaming presence of the being behind Miss Furnell.“Are you okay?”Kevin asks with concern, I see his body slump as I try to focus solely on him.

“I don’t know,”I reply back telepathically, I don’t know why I can talk with him this way. But for the first time ever I’m extremely grateful I can because words would fail.

“Ah Miss Draken, you’re finally awake,” Mr Skullmyer says with relief as he strides into the room. “You gave us a fright, lovely.”

I stare at him, my brain buzzing louder as I try to take everything in. I look around the room, thinking that there would be a few people in here. It’s a school for supernaturals, surely there would be accidents more often than not.

“Poison?” Mr Skullmyer pulls my attention back to him. “Where did you get the puncture marks and claw marks from?”

“What?” I blink rapidly as I stare at him, waiting for him to explain.

“Your wounds?”

At his words, the dull throbbing pain roars to life again across my ribs and abdomen. I whisper-scream as I curl into the foetal position to try and get it to subside. My breathing’s laboured as I pant my way through the pain, tears escaping the corner of my eyes. I can see Kevin watching me from his spot in the back of the room; I know no one else can’t see him but I’m glad he’s staying out of the way.

The pain dulls as I stay curled up, allowing me to unfurl myself gingerly from my position. I lift up my top, my eyes widening at the bruising covering my entire abdomen. Jagged marks litter my body and I can see the holes from something that pierced my skin. Memories flash in my mind, followed by the sound of a distant roar that fills me with terror.

“I don’t know.”

Mr Skullmyer’s brows furrow as he scrutinises me. I keep eye contact with him as I try my hardest to slow my heartrate to a normal level. Panic is still heavily flowing through me, and that’s not a good thing. He’s a Dhampir that can more than likely smell every one of my emotions, along with the nurses in here.

“I know you’re lying, what happened?” he presses.

It takes everything I have left in my reserve tanks to pull myself up so I’m in a normal sitting position. I successfully get my heart rate to a normal rhythm as I look between Miss Furnell and his gaze.

“I can’t remember.”

He sniffs the air, his head cocking to the side. Miss Furnell looks between us as he watches me. I don’t break from my position, keeping my eyes firmly on him to push my point across. I can see Kevin behind him with a confused look on his face.

“If you remember anything, I need you to tell me straight away,” he urges. “Poison, with everything that happened with the intruders, I need to know anything you remember so I can keep you all safe.”

“Of course.” I slouch back in the bed, the pressure from sitting up straight has the pain growing again.

“You’re excused from classes until you heal,” he says with a soft, reassuring smile. “We know it’s not going to be quick, but I need you to know I am taking what happened to you very seriously.”

“Thank you,” I whisper, the guilt at lying to him is already starting to rear its ugly head. “When will I be able to go back to the house?”

“Not until you’re able to move on your own and the pain is at a more manageable level,” Miss Furnell says with a soft smile. I smile back because I know she’s worried about me, it’s as clear as day on her face and I’m thankful for the concern.

The door bursts open, and a pissed off Belladonna Draken storms into the room. Her hair whipping behind her as she glares at me.

“Have you found out who is the cause of my niece’s injuries?” she demands, her hands firmly planted on her hips.

Miss Furnell slinks to the furthest part of the room, while I pull my bedsheet up higher to cover myself. I have to hold back a snort as both Kevin and Mr Skullmyer roll their eyes in unison.

“Mrs Draken, would you follow me to my office so we may discuss this matter privately?” he says.

“Not a chance, Skullmyer, and it’s Council Leader Draken to you,” she growls. “Do not forget the cavern between us on the hierarchy.”

Wow, she’s well and truly channelling her bitch mode today. I notice Kevin twitching behind her and I know he’s silently laughing at my thoughts.

“You may be the council leader, but, remember, I am the headmaster of this institute. Voted by all the council members unanimously. Including you,” he throws right back and I have to admit, I’m impressed.

“What happened to you?” she snaps, rounding on me and ignoring everyone else in the room as she folds her arms and looks down the length of her nose at me.

“I can’t remember,” I mumble, not wanting to make eye contact with her.

“I want the person or persons responsible for this to be dealt with swiftly,” she growls, turning to look at Mr Skullmyer once more.
