My eyes connect with Miss Furnell’s and she gives me a sympathetic look. I smile back softly to reassure her I’m not bothered by the brush off. The thing is, I am so used to the uncaring nature of my aunt that it doesn’t bother me anymore. It used to, when I was younger; I could never understand how someone could be so cold.

“I want to know if this has anything to do with the attack that happened the other day, because if it does, I think it may be time to rethink the Vasi being the ones to keep us all safe,” she says.

“I assure you, the Vasi are very good at what they do. Recent events prove they get the job done,” he fires back.

“Has she made any progress since being here?” she demands.

A tapping noise fills the room as she folds her arms across her chest, and I know she’s tapping her foot. Which is her way of telling everyone she’s becoming impatient.

“Some weird things have been happening, but we aren’t certain yet if they were caused from Poison’s powers coming forth.”

“What do you mean, weird things?” she asks.

“Well, there have been instances where the weather has become rather unpredictable, but as I said, we aren’t certain.” Mr Skullmyer takes the same stance as my aunt with his arms folded across his chest as he watches her watch him. “But we will know if her powers do finally show up at some point.”

“I am not wasting mine or anyone else’s time with her. If her powers haven’t shown themselves by now, then they aren’t going to,” she says with disgust.

“Great, just talk about me like I’m not even here,” I gripe.

Both of them turn to look at me. Mr Skullmyer is fighting back a smirk, but the look on my aunt’s face makes me want to crawl inside the mattress I’m laid on to get out of her vicinity.

“An outburst, really, Poison?” she sneers. “As I told you before, you will go to the human world if your powers don’t show themselves. You’ve been here three weeks and all you’ve done is hide away from an attack, and somehow got yourself badly injured.”

“Council mem—”

She cuts Mr Skullmyer off. “I’ve had enough waiting around for you to show yourself as a worthy part of this community. I will get everything arrange for the memory wipe.”

My mouth drops open as she turns and strides out of the room, like she hasn’t just imploded my life.

CHAPTERTEN

She can’t!Panic races through my mind and I watch in shock as Mr Skullmyer chases after my aunt, the door to the hospital room slamming shut behind them. Tears track a line down my cheeks as reality sets in. I’m going to have to go to the human world.

A sob escapes as I hunch over, not bothering if I pull the wounds on my abdomen. My life as I know it is over.

I look to the back of the room through tear-filled eyes. Kevin moves closer to me, both sadness and anger etched on his face as he keeps looking to the door she has just exited from.

“Mr Skullmyer will talk her out of it, dear,” Miss Furnell says, coming over to me and handing me a tissue to wipe my tears. Her kindness smashes through what was left of the gates that were holding my emotions at bay.

“I really appreciate your optimism, Miss Furnell, but I know my aunt,” I say, defeated.

I gently move myself down the bed and gingerly move onto my side, turning my back on the lovely old woman. “I’d like to be alone.”

“Of course, dear,” she says sadly.

I wait until I hear the soft click of the door before I let the full extent of the emotions inside of me free.

“She won’t send you to the human world, Pop,” Kevin says from the right side of my bed.

I see his enormous shadow on the wall slowly start to change shape as he becomes smaller. Small enough for his head to rest against the mattress so he can make eye contact with me.

“We both know she will,” I whisper.

“I won’t let her,” he insists. “What happened to you?”

“I don’t know,” I say the same twisted lie I told the others, hoping he will take it as a hint and not question me on it.

“Bullshit! You can lie to them but not me, Poison,” he snaps. “Where were you to get these sorts of wounds?”
