“Scout’s honour?” I ask.

“Yeah, scout’s honour. I would do the salute but, you know, I’m missing the most important appendages to be able to do that.”

I burst out laughing, the mental image of him having arms and hands on his snake body absolutely kills me. But damn if I’m not glad he doesn’t because adding digits to his already mischievous body is asking for trouble.

“So what we doing first?” he asks.

“We have to explore,” I say excitedly. “This is the first time I’ve ever been able to do something like this.”

His smile widens as I hop from foot to foot in my excitement, I should be more freaked that I’m on my own. Well, not technically, but I’ve never had the freedom to do what I wanted. My aunt kept me under wraps because she knew people would talk, and if I did something wrong with being a dud,‘It would look bad on the clan and I can’t have that!’

I brush off the thoughts of my aunt, and anything else for that matter, I want to be able to enjoy one day of my life where I can do everything I want to do without having to worry about repercussions. I walk to what I think is the main door, opening it and smiling widely when I find the corridor beyond.

“You’re forgetting something,” he says behind me. I turn to look at him, and he smirks.

Looking at something on the table, I follow his line of sight with my eyes and find a set of keys shining in the daylight on top of the coffee table. I look at him with a cocked head.

“Humans use keys to look up their houses when they’re not in,” he says.

“Wow, why?” I ask confused. “We never had to do that.”

“Yeah, well humans aren’t able to defend themselves like supes can,” he says sadly. “Would you break into a house not knowing what lies beyond the door in the supernatural world?”

Shit! This is going to be one hell of a learning curve for me. I’m not a complete imbecile, but what you need to understand is. Most supernatural kids while growing up get to come into the human world for things and then they get a chance to learn all about the people we share the world with. Me? I never had anything like that, my aunt kept me in Draken Manor to keep me safe. At least that was the line she used to use, but now I know it was to keep me out of sight.

“Head’s up!”

Kevin’s tail flicks and I jump back as something is launched at me, catching it mid-air. The coldness of the metal in my hand is so surreal, even though the keys have been on the coffee table in direct light, they’re cold.

“You remember the deal?” I ask over my shoulder as I make my way to the front door. When he doesn’t answer, I glace back at him, and he’s nodding his enormous head.

“Let’s go.”

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

We step out of the building onto the street, well,Istep, Kevin just kind of slides along. I look to my left to make sure that nobody is seeing the giant fifteen-foot snake at the side of me. Although I’m positive he’ll be doing his invisible thing in the human world. The sights and smells assault my senses as the world goes about its day. Horns blare as cars have to wait at traffic lights, people are talking and laughing as they sit at the tables of the across the street.

Smells from all types of food makes my mouth water, mmm… and is that freshly brewed coffee? I’m going through a full sensory overload and we haven’t even got away from my flat yet. Yeah, I know, right, I have my own flat. As we made our way down from my floor, honestly, I’m glad there was a lift. But then again it would have been funny to see him try and get down so many stairs. Kevin told me that Tanika had left a note from my aunt saying the flat was mine and the bills were all taken care of… As a donation to help people with tragic pasts to be able to move on with their lives.

I bet she wasn’t expecting the memory wipe to somehow screw up with me keeping all my memories.

I spot signs on the end of the street, my eyes reading every one of them as the noise of the hustle and bustle continues to surround me. I smile wide as I see the one pointing in the direction of a shopping centre.

“What you grinning at?” Kevin asks as he also looks around.

“Look,” I say pointing to the sign. “I’ve always wanted to go to a shopping centre.”

Kevin’s grin matches my own, and I wiggle the card again, my smile becoming wider.

“Let’s do it,” he says, setting off in the direction the arrow is leading us.

I follow behind him, my eyes taking in everything surrounding me. There are shops with weird little trinkets inside, bars and restaurants lining either side of the street. The road is filled with cars stuck in a traffic jam, with music blaring out of the speakers. Parents having arguments with their kids about one thing or another; this is way more than I ever imagined it could be. They’re just going through the motions of life and dealing with any situation that comes up for them.

They’re lucky in my opinion, they don’t have to worry about all the things that come with being a part of the supernatural world. The thought of being able to do what normal people do, is riveting. Crap! What does it mean though, do I have to attend school here? Do I need a job? Surely them wiping my memories would have given me new ones but it hasn’t, and nothing is different. Even the note from Tanika was lacking information, basically here’s your money, have at it.

“What’s got the cogs in your head turning?” Kevin asks over his shoulder.

“I’m just thinking,” I say as I stop at his side. We’ve made it further than I realised, and I follow the direction he’s staring. My mouth drops open and my eyes widen as I take in the massive building in front of us with high gleaming windows and the words ‘Ravenshard shopping centre’ sprawled across the front of it.
