“Have you seen how pretty it is?” I ask, pointing to the colours on the floor.

He looks to where I’m pointing then looks at me, his face full of worry, and I’ve no idea why. It’s then I feel myself start to sway and have to widen my stance to keep myself balanced. Woah, head rush, I hate it when this happens. I stumble to the side, and Ajax manages to stop me falling. I smile up it him, giggling as a weird sensation washes over me.

“What’s wrong with her?” Ajax asks Kevin, like I’m not even here.

“I don’t know, I think she’s exhausted and is starting to hallucinate or something,” he says.

I see shapes move in on either side of us, and I jump back as an unmeasurable amount of fear washes over me.

“Get away from me,” I bellow, pushing the shadows away that are trying to grab me.

“Poison, calm down,” Kevin says, his voice panicked.

I grin at him, and his eyes widen. Seeing him with so much fear in his face for the first time ever sets me off in uncontrollable laughter. Ajax keeps a tight hold of me, and I see some of the guards coming over, their faces lined with concern… and that’s it. I laugh harder as Ajax continues looking down at me, worried. I spot Kevin looking at me over his shoulder. Ajax shouts something to one of the guards and then I’m being dragged somewhere. I protest, trying to grab onto anything I can so I can stay here and look at all the pretty colours.

“Get that portal running now!” Ajax bellows at someone. His words stop the fight within me and I stare at him as he smiles down at me gently. “You’ll be home soon.”

A sinking feeling swallows me and everything goes black. The portal swallowing me into the waiting darkness, I really wish there was an easier way to travel. I gasp as I feel like clothes in a washing machine, the darkness changing from pitch black to having gold speckles across it like the night sky. From the feeling, I know we’re in the portal.

I’ll never get used to something like this.

The motion spins faster and I giggle, screaming that I’m flying at the top of my lungs and cackling my head off like a maniac. Kevin laughs with me, which only encourages me more. I throw my arms out and push myself away from Ajax.

“Poison, what are you doing?” he bellows, reaching for me.

“I can fly!” I squeal with excitement. “This is awesome.”

He disappears, and my arms flail as I search for him. He’s nowhere in the portal, then the pitch starry-filled night sky splits with a brilliant white light and the feeling changes.

“Oh crap!” I yell, now flying through the air before I hit something solid that grunts.

Ajax grimaces as I look him, that’s when I realise the portal spat me out after it did him and we are now a tangled mess on the ground.

“Oh my god,” I squeal in embarrassment. It doesn’t help me when I notice how he feels under my hands. I jump up to my feet, my cheeks heating, and Kevin’s cackling his head off as he slithers out of the portal with a massive smile on his face.

“Poison,” a voice says, pulling my attention away from the embarrassment.

I look to my right and my mouth drops at the sight of the gates of the Academy sprawled out before me. The huge metal gates with the emblem on them are split open and two people are standing there smiling at me.

“Mr Skullmyer,” I say with a smile. I never thought I would be this happy to see a Dhampir again but he was brilliant with me when I first came here. “Miss Furnell.”

I’m surprised to see the old woman; she smiles at me and beckons me forward. I move over to where they are standing and hug them one by one.

“I am so happy to have you back here with us at the Academy, Poison,” Mr Skullmyer says with a wide smile. “I am sorry it took me so long to do anything about it.”

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“We have much to discuss, but I think it’s better if we have this discussion in private,” he says, looking around the woods.

I nod my head as he tucks my arm around his and sets off into the Academy grounds. I hear Kevin’s scales sliding across the gravel and the heavy footfalls of Ajax’s feet as we get deeper into the Academy. I was hoping to get in here without anyone knowing I’m back yet, but fate has found another way to screw me over and decided it was a good day to mess with me.

The grounds are teaming with people and they all notice the headteacher pulling me along, then the mutterings start up. I drop my chin to my chest, not wanting to see the disgusted looks on their faces. I know the students won’t be happy about me being back, they made it known they weren’t happy about me being here in the first place. I peek at some of them, and I breathe a little easier when I realise they are the students I have seen around but never really had any interaction with.

We make it into the main building where Mr Skullmyer’s office is housed, and the woman on reception gasps when she sees me. He glares at her and she drops her eyes back to whatever she was doing in the first place. Miss Furnell walks on my other side, her hand resting against the small of my back, rubbing comforting small circles there. Mr Skullmyer opens the door to the office and ushers us all in. Ajax is the last one through and I hear the soft click of the door closing behind us. I glare at Kevin as I see him watching him.

“I know what happened in Ravenshard,” Mr Skullmyer says as he takes his seat behind the desk. “You’re not to blame for that, if anyone is, I am.”

“No you’re not, you weren’t there,” I retort, taking the seat in front of the desk. “You can’t blame yourself.”
