“You’re an Elemental, Poison,” he says, clasping his fingers together as he leans his forearms on the desk. “When your powers started to manifest, I had a sneaky suspicion that was what was presenting itself.”

“Elemental?” I ask in a hushed tone, I’ve heard of them but I’ve never truly understood what one actually is.

“They are magic users, who can control the elements with their emotions,” Miss Furnell says. “The power has only shown itself on occasions in the last thousand years but never to the magnitude it’s showing with you.”

My eyes jump between them, and the confusion must be clear on my face as they both smile like parents having a difficult conversation with a child. I don’t speak as I try to process what they’re saying but it leaves me with a question.

“What does that mean for me?” I ask, my heart currently feeling like it’s residing somewhere in my feet and anxiety swarms within me.

“That’s the thing,” Mr Skullmyer says sheepishly. “We don’t know, the last Elemental to have this sort of power was the one who put the void back in its dimension.”

“What?” I gasp, my anxiety quickly becoming fear at the mention of the void.

As children, our families told us bedtime stories about the void to make us go to sleep and behave ourselves but as we got older and learned about the clan histories, the void wasn’t just a bedtime story. It’s the thing that nearly decimated our world.

“All Elementals had to have a familiar with them to help control their powers, so I think the first place we need to start is seeing which companion you choose,” Mr Skullmyer says as he taps away on the tablet in his hand. “Excellent,” he muses.

My eyes go to Kevin’s and Ajax looks at him too, so he must have his weird invisibility thing set so only me and Ajax can see him. He smirks at me and I know we’re both thinking the same thing, there is only one familiar I will have and he is already my guardian, but how do I explain him to the teachers?

“You don’t,”he says through the link.“You have to remember, Pop, Basilisks are extinct and I don’t trust them enough to not do something stupid.”

“Earth to Poison,” Mr Skullmyer’s voice breaks through mine and Kevin’s conversation. I blink rapidly like I’ve just been caught staring into space.

“Sorry, what did you say?” I ask, rubbing my slick palms against the tops of my thighs.

“Ajax is going to be your protection detail and I think it’s best if you don’t attend regular classes until you have gained some control. Ms Havendoom has agreed to take you to the animal keep to see if you bond with one of them.”

“Erm,” is the only thing I manage to push through my teeth.

“You must be very tired. If you need anything, day or night, my door is always open,” he says, he turns and slowly takes in the room with a knowing look on his face. My heart stutters as his gaze meets mine once again and I wait for him to say something but he doesn’t.

With that, I’m dismissed.

CHAPTERTWENTY

Last night was really awkward in the house, Kevin was happy to be back and decided he wanted his own room. But the thing that really threw the pair of us for a loop was Ajax practically moving himself in. He turned up with a bag slung over his shoulder, declaring he would be staying in Draken house until Mr Skullmyer tells him I no longer need his protection.

“You okay with everything?” Kevin asks as I sip my coffee.

“I would rather he wasn’t here, and honestly I’m nervous about today,” I say as I twirl the cup in a circle between my hands.

Kevin cants his head at me, his face is full of questions. But he knows what I’m worried about. Miss Havendoom scares the crap out of me, and she’s the one who is helping me to pick a familiar when I already have one.

“I’m not your familiar, Pop, I’m your guardian,” Kevin says.

“Will you stay out of my head?” I chastise him.

“Easier said than done when you’re practically screaming your thoughts at me,” he retorts with a huff.

The legs on the stool squeak against the kitchen floor as I stand up and look my friend over, but I keep my mouth. I grab my bag from the stool they’re on and head to the front door. Screw it, I’m going to be early meeting her, but hopefully that will give me some points.

The front door slams behind me, the echo of it filling the crisp morning sky. I’m hoping I will be able to avoid the rumour mill by being out this early. Yeah, I know I’m going to have to face it at some point, but I haven’t got the mental capability for it today. I cautiously step out and look around but I don’t see anyone, I breathe a sigh of relief. Fate must’ve decided to leave me alone for once.

“You don’t want to antagonise fate, Poison, she can be a very fickle being at times.”

My mum’s words filter across my mind, but surely even Fate knows that there is a limit on how much someone can take? I get the wholewhat doesn’t kill you makes you strongerand all that Jazz but, c’mon, haven’t I had enough already?

The morning air is chilly, which is fitting for the season considering it’s autumn. The leaves are working their way from the trees and this month is the Halloween party. I remember because I know Rico is so excited about it, it’s his favourite time of year. For me, I love Christmas, the decorations and food are the best.
