“I’m Toni.”

“I like the name,” I say.

I tend to feel awkward around new people but I don’t know why—I like her energy.

“I don’t think I’ve seen you in this class before.”

She snorts. “Yeah, physics? Not my thing.”

I frown. What is she doing here, then?

“But, hey, I think I’m going to enjoy it here.”

“You’re new?” That’s even weirder. What would a new student be doing in class one week before the final?

Maybe she’s taking a tour of campus.

I open my mouth to ask, when the girl looks past me, her mouth dropping open. “Oh, shit. Get down.”

She forcefully grabs my head and pushes it behind my desk, just as a loud sound pierces my eardrums.

It sounds like fireworks except, far too close.

Guns. It’s a gunshot.

I glance at the front of the class from under the desk, and to my shock, I see my last foster mother, a bloody gun in hand.

“Jenny?” I ask before I can stop myself.

She turns in circle, trying to spot me, but it’s chaos all around. There are screams and people trying to run from her, taking the back exit.

Toni curses, and grabs my wrist. “This way,” she insists, pulling me toward the window.

“But—”

The door makes a lot more sense, doesn’t it?

“She wants you!” Toni whispers. “The moment she sees you, she’s going to shoot. Or something equally dramatic. Follow me.”

I am rushing on all fours behind the girl, asking myself many questions, chief amongst them, how would she know Jenny wants me?

“Toni,” I whisper, as she leads us to the professors’ offices, and then through an emergency exit. I stand. “How—how did you know how to get out?”

She tosses her pretty hair, and smiles. “Because I’m your bodyguard, silly.” She touches something on her ear. “Toni to team two. Boots coming your way, over.”

Then she closes the door behindme, staying inside.

Why is she staying back? What if she gets hurt because of me?

I try the knob, but it’s locked, so I bang against the door, and curse. Dammit.

“Toni!” I call, just as strong hands grab me by the back.

“Got her!” a voice I don’t know calls.

I swing my fist, kicking my legs. “Let me go! Let mego!” I scream.

“Miss, Sarah, I’m trying to—”
