“Let. Me.Go!” I kick his shin, and bring my fist up to his jaw.

The man grabs my wrist before I can connect with him. I bring my fist back for another round and—

“Sarah!” I look back, and see Marius running towards us.

The fight leaves me as I spot him, because I know he’ll take care of the stranger who tried to grab me—a tall, muscular guy with dark blond hair.

He reaches us and brings his arms around me, squeezing me tight. Then, to my confusion, he turns to my assailant. “And you must be part of the new team.”

The man nods tightly. “Adam, sir. I lead the team. Glad to meet you—though I didn’t think it’d be under these circumstances.”

“You’re…a bodyguard!” I suck in a breath. “I’m so sorry!”

Adam shrugs. “Don’t be. Glad to see you can throw a punch—I can help you work on the technique if you’d like a few tips. This way if you don’t mind. We still have a situation in there.”

He tries to lead us away, but I shake my head. “No! Toni—she’s in there, by herself. Jenny—my older foster mother. She has a gun. She’s dangerous. She shot up the class!”

I sound hysterical to my own ears, and feel it too.

Adam is most definitely not hysterical. “Toni’s fine.”

“But Jenny has a gun,” I say, sounding whiny, pleading.

He smirks. “So does Toni.”

SARAH

It turns out that Toni is some sort of a super-solider—or at the very least, a highly trained bodyguard. She looks my age—early twenties at most—but somehow, she didn’t only survive against a crazed, armed woman, she shot her back, aiming right between the eyes.

I’ll never know exactly why Jenny did what she did, what pushed her to hunt me in that classroom. What I do know is that it’s over. She’s gone. Toni saw to that.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

The gorgeous brunette smiles up at me. “Honestly. She couldn’t aim for shit, the bullet barely ever grazed me.”

I can see that’s true—her wound is still bleeding, hence why Adam’s applying pressure on it, but it was a thin line, and not very deep.

“It’ll scar,” Adam says, frowning.

Toni shrugged, unbothered. “It doesn’t even hurt that bad.”

I don’t know if she’s saying that to make me feel better.

An ambulance arrives shortly after.

“Can we got to the hospital to see her?” I press.

Marius tightens his hold on me. “Of course. But they might not let us in right away since we’re not family.”

I don’t know why I took to her so quickly; it usually takes me ages to warm up to new people. But I really like her, and I feel terrible that she got hurt protecting me.

“Is it really over?” I whisper, not daring to believe it. “What if her husband was the one in charge?”

Marius’s smile is…secretive. I think I know him pretty well by now, but can’t read it at all. “Oh, don’t worry. He’s taken care of.”

I decide I don’t want to ask. Not yet. I’m far too shaken after everything, my heart still beating so fast in my chest.
