“No.”

“Drop the job and work for me,” I offer. An olive branch. A compromise. “I need a bodyguard.”

I don’t. I’ve had to deal with seven physical altercations in my life and I came on top each time. I was trained by Dimitri Volkov, and no one of his caliber has ever come after me.

Besides, my driver, my attaché, and even my secretary double as security.

She’ll be safe.

But she’ll be far, far too close.

“You do?”

“I want rich people to spend billions of dollars caring for the poor. Of course I do.” There’s a reason I chose politics are a career. Lies come easy to me.

She bites her lower lip, thinking.

Two years. It’s been two years I let her go. Mostly because she was nineteen, then. She’s still a baby. Twenty-one. I wanted her to see the world, get some experience, achieve her goals.

“I’ll think about it.”

I smile.
