I let her go. As much as I wanted to chase her down again, she was late for her next class, and this was not the time nor place for me to conquer her. I’d let her think she won this battle…for now.
My phone rang, distracting me from the woman disappearing from my view. It was an out of country code.
It had to be a call from home. There was no place else that would reach me. “Pronto.”
“Fratello?”My brother Sebastian answered.
“What’s wrong?”I continued in fluent Italian.
“They are coming for you.”
My blood ran cold.“Now?”
“Yes. They want their justice for your part in the elimination of their brethren.”
I shook my head in exasperation.“They still blame me?”
“If you had not made a bad deal, the leaders of the new organization would not have been executed by us. We have protection in place. Do you?”
My answer must have been made known in my heavy sigh.
“You better run then.”He clicked off the call.
I hung my head. My brother had shown me more kindness than anyone else in thefamiglia.I owed him one.
Thankfully, I had a planning period, but I would not take it in my office where Laura could find me again. If she sidled up to me one more time, I’d break her neck. Instead, I headed to the student cafe.
After ordering, I sat down and pulled my phone out and emailed Eden’s Lit professor, letting him know I held her up. I wouldn’t want her getting into any trouble on my behalf.
Once I got my coffee, I sent off a few emails to students, reminding them of deadlines that were approaching. They were the ones who needed an extra push over the semester or else they’d fail my class. I didn’t want anyone to fail. Not with how high tuition was.
