“Jesus, Silas. You scared me,” she muttered.

“You look incredible.”

She rolled her eyes. “I look tired.”

“You’re always beautiful to me.”

Eden deflected the compliment. “I meant to ask, how are you getting away with this time off of work? What will you do for money?”

“Eden, honey, I have more than enough money to live a dozen lives and still not make a dent in it.”

Her eyes widened. “Then why are you even teaching?”

I shrugged. “It’s something to do.”

“Can I ask why you have so much money?”

“Born with it. Family money.”

No need to go into detail just yet. I left the counter, captured her in my arms and pulled her against my chest.

“I love you,” I rasped. “Do you know that?”

Eden stiffened against me.

“You don’t have to say it back. I just needed you to know what page I’m on. There is no doubt in my mind that you will get there with me, eventually.”

She relaxed and giggled. “You’re pretty cocky.”

Her laughter made me smile. The sound was music to my ears. I always wanted to make her happy. I wanted to be her everything.

“Just confident,” I corrected. “I’m used to getting what I want.”

“I already told you I loved you. Didn’t I?”

“You were pretty drugged. It doesn’t count.”

“Oh.” She shrugged. “Well, I—”

I put my finger over her lips. “As I told you, I cannot tolerate liars.”

She pulled her head back. “I could be telling the truth.”

“Could beis not good enough.” I then picked her up and threw her over my shoulder. She squealed in laughter as I marched her to the bedroom. “Time for bed. We have a busy day tomorrow.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Silas

I awoke earlybecause I had business to take care of today. I was hoping to get it out of the way fast so I could return to Eden, but knowing my family, I would likely be stuck there a while.

My family was formal on a regular basis, so I made sure to wear a suit. Unlike most families of the world, there was no “just hanging out”. There were rules and protocols and formalities that had to be followed, even when visiting the parents.

I wrote a quick letter to Eden.

Must run some errands. Do not leave. It is very dangerous to go into the city without me. I will be back shortly. Make sure to eat breakfast. Here is a burner phone in case of emergencies. My number is already programed into it.

I placed the note under the smart device, leaned in to kiss Eden’s forehead, and left.
