“That meat tastes good, huh? Are you sure you’re batting for the right team? Cause the moans you’re letting out are making me wonder.” For fucks sake.

“Stop it. You’re gonna make me choke.” I groan as soon as the words leave my mouth.

“Heard that before. Anyhoo, you eat while I tell you what I learned.” I nod and pop a few fries into my mouth.

“They have you on the premises, with the body and the alleged weapon a few feet from you. I was able to get you out since they royally fucked up taking you in, but circumstantial stuff is pretty fucking damning. So the question is going to come down to whether or not this Judge Carmichael has been bought by Anton.” He’s been pacing this entire time and finally sits down hard in the only chair in the room.

He grabs a cup on the side table and sucks on the straw with such aggression. I arch a brow, and he shrugs.

“Milkshake is too thick.” He says before going back to sucking.

“You could use a spoon.” He shakes his head, all the while turning red with his efforts.

“You’re going to burst a blood vessel, Cannibal.” I snort as I watch him finally bring the chocolate up the straw.

His look of triumph and the following smile with chocolate leaking from his mouth makes me laugh so hard I forget the shit show I’m in for a moment. I clap, and he bows.

“I’m sure your wife would be very proud of you. Although I think you owe her an apology if you suck on her like that.” He smirks at me while taking another sip of his milkshake and then shakes his head while wiping the drop off his lip with his thumb and then licking it clean.

“She only complains when I stop.” He winks at me, and I throw a pillow at him.

We both hear the locking mechanism turn right before Phoenix and Dragon walk into the room. One is frowning hard, and the other is bouncing with excitement.

“I am never going shopping with this idiot again.” Cane mumbles while dropping bags on the spare bed in the room.

“You can’t come to LA and not go shopping on Rodeo Drive, dude!” Xander scolds him and then turns his blue-green eyes at me.

His messy curls bounce on his head as he talks. I finish my food while I watch these men I consider brothers argue back in forth. It’s amusing, sobering, and brings the reason I came to LA into perception. I need to preserve this no matter the cost.

That includes my own life.

Anton

I’m back in Vegas, sitting at my desk, and the irony of my pose isn’t lost on me. The difference between here and LA? I’m breathing, and he isn’t. That brings a smile to my face as my phone chimes.

I pick up the device and read the message on the screen. I put the tumbler of scotch I was enjoying down and sit up straighter as if that would change the words on my phone.

Anger boils over, and I throw the thing against the wall, watching it shatter. I open up my desk and take out a brand new one, placing it on the table. I throw back the expensive liquor and hold my breath as it burns down my throat.

I close my eyes, and the words are burned into my eyelids.

Sorry boss, she got away.

“You can run, Aurora, but you can’t hide. I’ll fucking find you.” I sit and remember the last time I had her in my arms.

She promised to love me forever. It’s one she is going to keep beyond the grave. I am the only man to have ever touched her, and it’s going to fucking stay that way.

Opening my eyes, I start the process of setting up the new phone, so I can call a more reliable service to retrieve my property. Because that is what Aurora is, she just needs a fucking reminder.

“I’m coming for you,” I say as the download from the cloud begins.

Ten minutes later, my phone is up and running. I have a missed phone call and voicemail. I hit play and listen.

“Mr. Blair, this is Detective Monroe. You asked me to update you on any new developments. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to hold Ms. Davenport, and she was released to her attorney. She is due to be seen in front of Judge Carmichael in the morning.”

I place the new phone on my desk before it meets the same fate as its predecessor. I pick up the tumbler and roar as I throw it. The noise brings my housekeeper running to my door in shock.
