“We are in need of Fukuma Enterprises.” I try to follow his line of thought but come up blank.

“Why do you need his….” It hits me like a ton of bricks.

My father owns one of the biggest import and export businesses in the world. It’s the reason the Yakuza planted him in America. He pretty much owns the docks in all major cities.

“I see.” I shake my head because I try so hard to forget he exists that I never dreamed of asking him for help.

“He’s not going to help us.” On principle, because I left, he’ll never help me with anything.

“I wouldn’t be so sure of that.” I look up at Satan, and he frowns.

“Not like you to be so emotional when asking us to help out.” He sits down on the side of the couch and runs a hand through his graying beard.

“We know who you were supposed to marry.” The fuck?

I’m about to ask how but then I remember who I work with.

“How long has Abel known?” He snorts, and it’s all the answer I need.

He’s always known. Fucking asshole. Of course, he’d keep that shit under wraps until it was fucking needed. Which means my family is somehow involved in what’s going on.

“Who?” I regret the question before I hear the answer.

“Anton Blair.”

GENEVIEVE

I’ve been walking into courthouses daily for almost a decade, but today is different. I may not be coming back out for a while. I have complete confidence in Abel’s law degree, but it’s one thing passing the BAR and actually practicing law.

I look up at the glass cube-looking building and sigh. I turn my face to the sun and soak in the rays a moment before nodding at the guys. Phoenix opens the door for me, and I walk in, followed closely by Abel and Dragon.

“Nervous?” I ask Abel when we clear the metal detectors.

“Like a virgin on prom night. What if I cum in two seconds?” I snort.

“Just don’t leave me behind when you climax.” He nods and offers me his arm.

“No pressure then.” On the outside, he looks sure of himself.

But since I’m holding his arm, I can feel the trembling. I pat him, and he looks down at me.

“No matter what happens, you didn’t do any of this. Anton did, remember that. But you better have an excellent escape plan.” I kiss his cheek as we get to the doors of the courtroom.

“One cake and file coming right up. Ready?” He asks while straightening his tie.

All three men are wearing suits. And it almost makes getting arrested worth it. If GQ ever does a deadly and debonair photo shoot, they need this on the front cover. I might not find any of them sexually attractive, but I can appreciate fine art when I see it.

“Are you?” I smile at them.

“Fuck no, but I work better when I don’t have a clue what’s going on. Let’s do this.” Abel opens the door, and we quietly walk in.

A quote from law school floats through my mind as I walk up to the defendant’s desk and sit with Abel.

“Always be prepared and try your best on all assignments. This level of preparedness is what your future clients will expect.” I whisper to myself while dread fills me.

“They skipped that in my online classes.” His joke falls flat as the bailiff calls out to us.
