Shit, that reminds me.

“Hey, Doc?” I call out, knowing that he’s here somewhere because the man needs to micromanage everything he does.

He catches me trying to sit up and frowns.

“Pull those stitches out, and I may let your ass bleed for being stubborn. Is it too much to ask for one of you assholes to listen to my orders?” He grumbles while helping me get into a sitting position.

“We listen, but we are adults and can ignore you if we see fit. You aren’t a Master here.” I lift an eyebrow waiting for his argument, and I’m surprised when he stays quiet.

“What did you need, Karma?” He turns his back on me, and now I’m frowning at his back.

“My need was superficial. Want to talk about it?” He slams his fist on the table and hangs his head.

“No.” He answers roughly, making me snort.

“Liar. What’s giving you trouble?” He turns and leans on the counter to face me, crossing his legs and arms.

“At the moment you. Big picture? My wife.” Interesting, Cody doesn’t usually share so quickly, which makes me suspicious as to why.

“And?” I prod because it’s clear he needs to get whatever it is off his chest, and being one of the only members who doesn’t love to gossip, and he knows his secret is safe with me.

“I have baby fever.” Huh, not what I was expecting.

“So knock up your wife. You got the right equipment. Or am I assuming too much?” He groans at me.

“Smart ass. Marisol is…” He pauses so long I don’t think he’s actually going to finish.

“Hesitant.” He finally reveals the real problem, and I see why he choose to confide in me.

“I see. Her body, her choice. You need to respect that. Has she told you why?” He nods, and I swear I see tears on his eyelashes.

“She doesn’t believe she’d be a good mother. Her family fucked up her head.” I nod.

“Sounds vaguely familiar.” There’s a reason our ragtag group has formed this family.

Satan somehow knew we needed each other, and I am forever grateful for the home I now have here. I tilt my head at Doc and wonder if the tears are for what he would miss out on or for the pain his wife has suffered. Hell, maybe it’s both.

Not every man on the planet is selfish, I remind myself.

“I was wondering if you’d talk to her?” Ah, hell no.

“Me? Cody, I’m not sure I would be any help in this department.” He rolls his eyes and shocks the shit out of me.

He finds that disrespectful, and Marisol has a sore ass more than once for the action. I smile, knowing he’s picking up his wife’s bad habits.

“She’s rubbing off on you.” His face breaks into a grin.

“I know. Talk to her about the daddy issues. Not the baby. I’ll handle that.” I roll my neck to ease the tension the thought of my father brings me.

“How similar are our past?” I don’t want to make this worse than it already is for him.

“Her father and uncles ran woman, her included. It’s why I’ve been the only man she’s been with sexually since her wife died. I have my own doubts that we’ve also talked about, but I thought maybe she needs a female ear.” I nod cause it makes some sense.

“I won’t pry. But I’ll discuss it if she’s willing. But honestly, neither of you are your parents.” He seems thoughtful a moment and then nods.

“Thank you.” I look away from his hopeful face and pray I don’t make things worse for him.

We both turn to look out the hall when a bunch of commotion comes through the doorway.
