Andrews gave me a “here we go” look. “It looks like our NIH grant fell through, but we’re working on the funding. Can you schedule us in the meantime?”

Sterling sighed over the other end. “I really wish I could. The demand has been pretty high, though.”

“We’re working on it,” I said quickly. “We can cover forty percent, but the rest has to come from our grants. We’ve had bad luck with them falling through.”

“Well, it’s tight competition,” Sterling admitted. “We’re old friends, Amos, so I’ll hold your spots for a little bit, but when will you know?”

“Not sure,” I admitted, fiddling with my phone. “But I’m going as fast as I can.”

“Okay. We all want this research to take off, and you and Cade are rock stars over there. Let’s make it happen.”

I smiled slightly to myself, but then my phone dinged again. I opened the app.

June: It’s 4 weeks and 2 days from now. Is that ok?

How had she gotten worse at her job in the last ten minutes?

Dr. Brady: I don’t care. As long as it fits the sched.

June: Just making sure!

I got a little wiggle of suspicion in my brain, but then my attention pulled back to Sterling as he began his update on the research he’d managed to compile, and the peer-reviewed studies on the cusp of publishing in journals around the world. Our research centered around connectomics, which aimed to map the neurons in the brain with precise, measurable images. We needed to use the latest technology to back up our claims, but getting the use of MRI 3T machines wasn’t like renting a carpet cleaner. It was expensive and hard to schedule in ample time blocks.

My phone dinged.

Starting to feel the heat of irritation creep up my neck, I checked it again.

June: Got the MRI. Your 11 is here.

Dr. Brady: Stop texting me everything you do.

June: I’m using the bathroom. If that’s ok?

Little twerp, I thought with pure vexation poking my temples.Fine. Play games.

Dr. Brady: No, it’s not.

June: Already going. I’ll update you later.

“Jesus,” I muttered.

Andrew gave me a questioning look while Sterling continued his excited rundown of their progress. I shook my head. I could handle June.

And I certainly would.

June: Kauffman says appt. ASAP?

Dr. Brady: What does the paper say? YES

June: Your 6 on Friday canceled.

Dr. Brady: I can read a schedule, thnx.

June: Going to the bathroom.

June: It’s almost my lunch, but I got F. Rocks MRI in.
